Description
My self knowledge is developing, so are my abilities. I feel skillfull if I'm in tune with the project. I'm more into permaculture environments, but also understanding another type of places, like old school farms. There is no ideal place, we are all mixing styles within the possibilities. Maybe you are in a paradise-holistic system but you live in a locality with instability, which is very common in the world we live.
I remember one of my first volunteering experiences in the Chapada Diamantina, inside north Brazil, and it was a great teaching to me that complete sustainability wasn't enough with your effort or hard working; people also had to get resources from outside the village. People also get bored. I remember one guy working as a waiter during a summer season and living as an old indian the rest of the year. I respect it.
Years later, I volunteer in Europe and I saw the same thing. In a rural area of Croatia there was an old woman with plenty of land and a lot of unfinished projects, so she needed volunteers to patching up holes. This in a way was something borderline, because you work as a repairman but you are not part of the project. The grey zone is big and both sides need empathy puting the cards on the table!
"Being honest may not get you a lot of friends but it'll always get you the right ones". John Lennon.
So I highlight the hosts I met that were honest and straightforward. Perhaps they don't run a project with your ideals, but they have something bigger inside. I remember an experience in an old farm in west Uruguay: they wanted to be more sustainable and trying to acquire new habits, mixing their cultural heritage with permaculture ideas. That was challenging for both sides. And you learn.
For certain my experience is limited, and there are some communities which are closer to sustainable practices. What is the coast to achieve it? The film "The beach" (based on a book written by Alex Garland) left a mark on me, I know is kind of dreamy but it has inside a strong idea. I believe anyway in being more sustainable, but not radically as I dreamed in my first youth.
On the road again and for sure leaving something behind.
