  • Description

The times we have felt most alive are the moments spent in nature. Living in New York City, a place rich with diversity and culture, has offered us the opportunity to discover and learn new things everyday. Overtime, however, the fast pace of city life has started to wear down on us, resulting in a general lack of fufillment. We hope to find purpose exploring the abundance of natural beauty this world and it's many people have to offer! There is something special about growing plants or tending to animals, watching them prosper as time passes, and being able to harvest and live off of the fruits of this dedication. For us, dedicating ourselves to building an intentional relationship with the earth is much more fulfilling then working a typical 9 to 5 job. We initially joined Workaway to find a community of people that share these same values. This program offers the opportunity to not only travel, but to discover the different environments, vegetation, and ways of living that are unique to communities around the globe. There are so many things we have yet to experience and we're eager to learn from those who can teach!

    (Mina)
I volunteered at the only compost farm in NYC. Practicing teamwork with other volunteers was important and I saw firsthand the reality of the food waste we create and the need to transform this waste into something beneficial. Recently I worked with an art gallery to help restore an exhibit. This consisted of polishing 500 brass rods, measuring the space carefully, and realigning them. I have held jobs working as a chef in various restaurants specializing in Japanese cuisine. My time as a chef contributed to my love for farming from a different perspective. The art of cooking and the many beautiful dishes could not be created if it wasn't for a single seed being planted from the beginning.
For the past 2 years I have embarked on a total of 14 month Workaway trips across Asia. I spent time on multiple farms, harvesting vegetables and taking care of blueberry trees. In Okinawa I lived and worked on a dairy farm, taking care of the cows and other animals such as ducks, chickens, rabbits, and a tortoise! In Hokkaido I took part in forestry maintenance and the processing/cutting of firewood to support my host’s local business. In Gunma, Japan I worked as a guesthouse staff and also helped out roasting beans and serving in the cafe they owned. I had the unique oppotunity to learn about Buddhism at a monastery in Kaohsiung. We lived among the monks and contributed daily by cleaning shrines or volunteering in the kitchen. My last Workaway was spent in Thailand, helping my host with various DIY projects for his home while also taking care of the house and his 9 cats! Each of these experiences offered me unique opportunities to not only learn and strengthen various skills, but also grow as a person.

Having grown up against the lush landscape of the Pacific Northwest, I have experience camping, hiking, and some backpacking! I love exploring new places throughout the pacific coast, these experiences shaped my fundamental outdoor skillset; skills like gardening, preparing food, tending to fires, and fishing. My dad is from Alaska and through his professional experience with construction, I have gained some basic knowledge of repurposing materials. I also have a background in customer service, having held hospitality and sales positions throughout my young adult life. I love working with kids, and have a myriad instructing skills which I honed teaching violin and assisting at a daycare in New York. In taking a break from pursuing a BSA in psychology, I would love to use my time working away to expand my knowledge of farming and tending to livestock. I enjoy hands-on learning and am passionate about sustainable living so these are both areas I hope to become more versed in!

  • What else ...

(Mina) I've been playing guitar since I was 8 years old so music is one of the biggest passions in my life. It allows me to express myself in a way without words. It's powerful in the sense that songs can carry emotions and memories with them. It's also a means to connect and unite others. I try to go on a hike at least once a week during the weekend. It's so important to have a moment in nature without the craziness of the world. It allows me a space to breathe and come back to myself. My grandmother has also been an avid gardener for as long as I can remember. I help out in her garden, harvesting her vegetables (mainly tomatoes, eggplants and different herbs), weeding, and fertilizing her plants. Some of my other hobbies include biking and cooking for my family.
    (Sophia)
I feel very fortunate to have grown up surrounded by the arts, and in a family with a large appreciation for all things creative. I've been playing the violin since the age of four as well as singing with my sister and friends and I have definitely brought this love for music into my young adult life. I also enjoy dancing and have a background primarily in ballet. I absolutely loved performing and teaching workshops throughout my adolescence. Moving my body in this purely intimate way has always grounded me and made me feel closer to myself and those around me. Similarly, being in nature is incredibly healing to me, and is something I have always used as a source of self reflection and as an escape. Reading and drawing have also been loves of mine along with animal care and helping out in the kitchen from time to time.
