After working in the corporate world and running my own business, I've come to realize that a more honest relationship with nature and humanity is better suited for a happy life. With this in mind, I am on a pilgrimage to learn the skills necessary to work the land, to become as close to self-sufficient as I am able, and to expand my knowledge of the different walks of life. It has been almost six weeks since I've left the farm and it has easily been one of the best experiences I could have hoped for. I had the pleasure of spending three months in Gerlinds home, and was immediately treated like part of the family.

The routine was easy to settle into, and the work was not difficult to do at all. It involved feeding… read more the horses in the mornings, taking them out to their respective fields, then returning for breakfast, afterwards cleaning the ponies paddock and a few hours of daily projects that are decided on an as needed basis, then a lovely hot, cooked meal before break time, finally bringing the horses back in to be fed for the evening and then Abendbrot for the helpers!

This routine varies depending on the time of year, as I was leaving, the horses were getting ready to stay out in their fields for the summer months. Likewise, during the time I was here, the horses needed daily attention, but the work really wasn't hard at all and the routine was automatic after two weeks.

The house was clean, dry and warm, the bedroom was large, bright and comfortable. The food was amazing and authentic, and I definitely miss the weekend breakfasts and conversations. There is limited Wi-Fi in the house, but its easily enough to text and look things up on your phone, but be careful not to do video calls or stream, as you'll use up the quota for the month and leave everyone with slow internet. There is incredibly fast internet by the stables, which I would use to download movies or shows to watch in the evening free time, and had no issues remainjng entertained the entire stay. The dogs are extremely well-behaved, and trained as a pack, so if you're not familiar with how pack mentality works, it may take a little adjustment on your part, but they definitely love to have their walks and play time.

Albrecht, Gerlinds son, was funny, engaging and always there to help out whenever I was the only helper for a week or two. On the weekends, we'd take his horse, Beli, out on carriage rides which were as impressive as they were stunning. Gerlind made a conscious effort to help with my German, and provided us with a daily vocabulary list that the other helper and I would study with each other.

Overall, I loved my time here and will definitely like to return at some point to see how the foal and the other horses are doing, and to have more conversations with Gerlind and Albrecht. Their patience with a cityboy with no experience was perfect for my first volunteer stay and has encouraged me to continue traveling the world this way.
