Hi, I'm Luna! I'm an 18 year old, aspiring novelist, with a genuine interest in connecting with others and making a positive impact on the world. In addition to writing, I have an insatiable curiosity for learning, which means I’m always looking for new books, experiences, conversations, and people to expand my knowledge.

I also love long walks, rainy days, playing the drums, reading, and cooking for my loved ones.

In the past, I: worked with AmeriCorp to tutor middle schoolers in language development; taught creative writing to adults with developmental disabilities; volunteered in community by helping address food insecurity and visited seniors in elderly homes. I have experience with general maintenance, cooking, cleaning, and home repair.

I won't pretend I know everything, but I'm a passionate learner and if you take the time to teach me, I will be a dedicated worker too!

I have worked as a tutor and teacher for both adults and kids, particularly those of disadvantaged backgrounds including: people with disabilities, kids with English as a second language, college students with English as a second language, and immigrants who recently moved to the U.S.

I can cook, clean, and perform basic home repair/maintenance (i.e. able to use manual and some electric tools, can make basic repairs). I am physically capable to: able to comfortably lift about 20kg (more with help), walk long distances, swim, etc.

I also know how to help take care of animals, and can even milk a goat.

I also play a number of instruments, but best at the drums. Though, because I haven't found the time to practice for a while, I'm probably a bit rusty now 😅

I have always thought that age or physical condition is not a limiting factor to be able to visit and help on this farm. The most important thing is predisposition, motivation and the desire to learn.

Luna has been here less than 5 days and the truth is, she seemed like a nice person, condescending, attentive to the explanations I gave her, although little by little I realized that she barely understood what I was explaining, perhaps out of arrogance, now who used to imply that in her country things are done in a more differet and efficient way. To this I add that he is a person who avoids asking questions, being informed or being up to date with the affairs of the community, in addition to being absent in moments of coexistence. Coexistence has been difficult. Since you are not involved in giving your honest opinion when choosing the daily menu, collaborating with food or cleaning common areas. Regarding diet, Luna has a particular taste for food that is different from what we eat on the farm. Here we eat our own vegetables, meat and milk, to which we hardly add spices, salt or sugar, because we like it that way. She preferred to bring her Coca-Cola, and other products from the store, of which I warned her that I will not be involved in her purchase since it is against my moral principles to feed an unhealthy industry.

Of the almost 5 days that she has been on the farm, she has only helped a maximum of 2 hours a day.

On WEDNESDAY when she arrived, we took her on an excursion to another town, since my daughter had to go to her circus classes. My son and I taught her the culture of the place, and we made her participate in our games.

On THURSDAY, the second day, I woke up with a serious neck injury, I couldn't move, and it was also raining, so no work was done that day. In the afternoon, Luna accompanied the volunteer who was here to bring the goats that were near the farm, she was never alone, and I told her that that day I couldn't move, but that we would go together with the next new volunteer another day when I recovered.

On FRIDAY I went to look for the new volunteer, so we hardly saw each other either. I arrived in the afternoon with the new volunteer and my children. So we couldn't work or share either. I only asked her to go for a walk around the mountain, giving her directions for a route. This aspect seems important to me for anyone who comes to find their way around this place, and I also consider it a pleasure, not a job, to be able to walk freely around this mountain that has historical, geological, landscape and nature wonders, and is also a small mountain where no one has ever gotten lost (in 30 minutes you are in an inhabited building)

On SATURDAY the 3 volunteers worked on a fairly easy task and only 2 hours in the morning. In the afternoon we all rested and played games and had meals together, except Luna who was again absent during the moments of coexistence. She also avoided contact with my children. So In the afternoon i asked the 3 volunteers to collect the goats from the mountain (30 minutes). I didn't go because I was taking care of my children.

On SUNDAY we worked again for 2 hours in the morning and in the afternoon no one took care of bringing the goats, keeping the chickens (3 minutes) and feeding the dog (1 minute).We have done these tasks every day, and it is the first thing I repeat and I insist all the volunteers, so that was not an unknown new task.

A stray dog from some hunters appeared and scared away the goats and I had to leave my children alone and go to bring the goats back. Seeing that 3 volunteers do not respond to the simple tasks and do not respond to the voice call or the phone calls, I wrote a messege to call them to a meeting at 6:00 p.m. Nobody shows up. Later I find Luna and tell her that I am disgusted with the behavior they are having, and I warn that if they don't improve they may have to find another place to volunteer. In these situations I offer the enough time to find another place, I don't tell anyone to go out on the next day... The situation that followed this conversation was that the other two volunteers apologized for being absent and disappearing, leaving their small task undone, and they are still here. Luna decided to leave, for which I approached her and got her a car that would take her to a good destination safely. She offered me money for all the inconvenience caused and I rejected it.

The fact that in 5 days a person evaluates so negatively an experience in which she has barely participated, and criticizes the life of a family and a project so negatively, says a lot about the person and the cultural enviroment from where she comes. I hope that future experiences are treated with more respect and dedication, and travel opportunities are used for cultural, spiritual and self and community growth.

I was supposed to spend 4 weeks with Juan but ended up only staying 5 days. I really wish I could say I enjoyed my stay there because there were so many things I enjoyed. The landscape is beautiful and while hiking up the mountain to get the goats is a bit difficult (at least for an unathletic person like me) it was also very fun and rewarding.… read more The roman road and the ermita above the farm are so beautiful, and the water from the river is so fresh and cold. Because I wasn't there long enough, I didn't really learn how to milk, but I was happy with what I did learn. The lodging was a bit rustic and the food a little bland, but I liked them both. It was nice to live in a more simple way.

That said, I felt the communication between Juan and I was rough during my stay. My main motivation for visiting was to learn new skills, specifically about herding the goats. However, with the exception of some guidance in milking, Juan did not really teach me anything and he seemed reluctant to do so. From the other reviews, I wonder if this was simply because I arrived at a bad time. His kids were with him so obviously (and understandably) he was a little preoccupied. Still, the first day I was there (before his kids arrived) he asked me if I wanted to hike up the mountain and herd the goats down alone. At this point, he hadn't even offered me so much of a tip on herding, and when I told him I wasn't sure I was ready to do that on my own, he seemed a little frustrated by this. Throughout my stay, he kept mentioning how he was an intuitive learner. This makes me wonder if he never intended to directly teach me anything, but simply have me learn by trial and error on my own.

I also found that there was little guidance in regards to the tasks I was supposed to be completing. From his profile, I was under the impression that the volunteers would choose their schedules for the week a week in advance and we would be assigned regular tasks. This was not the case. Juan spontaneously decided when he wanted to do things and expected the volunteers to be ready at a whim. He also didn't tell me any of the daily tasks that needed to be done (bringing the chickens in, bring the goats back, etc.) until the third day when another volunteer arrived.

I admit that there were many things I could have done better to make this stay more of a success. For instance, instead of asking him what needed to be done, I often waited for him to tell me. Though I will also state that I did ask a few times. Sometimes he gave me tasks, other times he told me that there was nothing to be done because of the weather, and twice he ignored me completely (even when, thinking he hadn't heard me, I repeated myself). I also spent a lot of time in my room without telling people I had gone there. And though I was excited to learn and do the tasks, my poor athleticism made me take a number of breaks or at least walk slowly.

Again, the other reviews are so positive that I feel this whole thing must be either: (a) my fault or (b) that it was just a strange time to arrive, maybe Juan was dealing with some personal stuff. Perhaps things would have gotten better within the next few days. That said, I do know that he told me and the two other volunteers that he was greatly unhappy with our work and was thinking of kicking us out. I can understand his apathy and distaste towards me; however, one of the other volunteers, who had been there 2 weeks before me, seemed to have helped Juan immensely. From what I heard, they spent many hours working on the road they were building together; the other volunteer got the goats everyday; and the volunteer helped with a number of other tasks. I was not there so maybe I am wrong, but from my perspective, it seemed unfair for Juan to be angry with that volunteer.

Even so, I do believe things would have improved had I stayed longer. However, as an 18 year old girl traveling alone for the first time, I just did not feel entirely that safe there. I do not believe I would have been physically harmed, but the threat to kick us out (which the other volunteers and I all found a little unexpected) rattled me greatly.

If you are thinking of staying, I would not advise against it. But I would proceed with some caution. Consider having a better backup plan than I did in case you need to leave, talk to the other volunteers that stayed longer, and maybe ask Juan about his thoughts on this post.
