  • Description

Hello! My name is Luke Hanson. I am a recent college graduate from Texas Christian University, and I couldn't be more excited to begin this workaway journey. Next year I will be applying for law school with an interest in environmental and civil rights law. I see law as an opportunity to do what I have always wanted to do - help people in any way that I can. While I am tremendously excited for law school, I also felt a calling to see and experience different cultures and values. And why wait until after law school to start helping people? I have two willing hands, and I can help people right now. So, I am taking a gap year to travel and volunteer.

I grew up near Seattle, Washington, close to the mountains and the ocean. I like to go hiking, backpacking, or camping at every opportunity. I absolutely love the outdoors, and I want to be able to experience our amazing Earth apart from just the beautiful mountains here. I love to introduce people to the outdoor experience and watch as they fall in love with it, as well as doing everything I can to protect our environment. While the mountains are my home, the ocean is no stranger to me either. I have a decent amount of boating experience and navigational skills, as my dad would take us out on the boat ever since I was a child. Here in the Puget Sound, we have an amazing yet delicate saltwater biome, teeming with incredibly interesting life. Oceanography and sustainability were regular parts of my school teachings. I am thrilled to be able to share my love for the mountains and oceans, as well as build my skills and learn new things about them!

Apart from my love of nature, I was also raised as a musician. I can play a variety of instruments, and I was raised in classical music and jazz. To me, there is nothing more fulfilling than sitting next to strangers who might not speak the same language as me - but we can speak the language of music together.
I have quite a few niche interests as well. I love cars of all kinds, working on engines, motorcycles, botany, puzzles, mindfulness, meditation, singing, skateboarding, surfing, and many more. If you can't already tell, I am the kind of person to eagerly throw myself into new experiences. While it has been amazing to be interested in so many different things, it also brings challenges. Personally, I invite challenge, because I know that overcoming it will make me a healthier, more capable person. I understand that many workaway options are not like a vacation, and that excites me. I approach every challenge with an optimistic mindset, and I enjoy bringing positivity into stressful situations.

So, why do I want to become a lawyer?
Well, there's a lot of backstory to that, but my driving desire is to be a beacon of goodness and kindness in a field that is filled with exploitation and injustice. I have seen many small people and businesses that are bullied by the big fish at the top of the legal food chain, and it breaks my heart. I want to be the lawyer that will fight for someone when no one else will. I want to do everything in my power to protect and preserve our beautiful Earth. I am very passionate about social justice, human rights, healthy infrastructure, and sustainability.

    Why a gap year?
Great question! While I am so excited to begin my career in law, I wanted to take the time to develop myself as a person before I commit to the intense lifestyle of an attorney. I have done some travelling (my favorite so far is Costa Rica), but I feel an intense desire to see more of the world, as much as I can. I want to see and experience different lifestyles other than the American lifestyle. And personally, I believe that the best way to help the world is to first know the world. And as I said before, I don't want to wait another 10 years until I am established in my career to start helping people. I believe I can do some real good as an attorney, but I also know that I can do some real good right now, serving a community with my own two hands.

I would be absolutely thrilled if you would help me along my journey! My goals are to see the world, experience and learn new cultures, develop myself as a person, and help wherever I go. I am a dedicated hard worker who isn't afraid to get my hands dirty. If you would have me, I promise to return all of your kindness back to you and the community. Because that's what I love doing!

  • More details about your skills

I have a pretty wide variety of skills, and I am always looking for ways to develop new skills.

    1. Construction experience
    - I have worked 4 years in construction. I know basic carpentry, painting, demolition, and other general construction skills. I am very accustomed to hard manual labor.

    2. Outdoor experience
    - I am a big outdoorsman. I regularly go backpacking, and I have taught many people how to be safe in the wilderness. I know how to protect and preserve an environment, as well as a variety of wilderness emergency protocol.
    - I was raised on a lake and near the ocean with a boat, so I have a fair amount of boating navigation, maintenance, and safety experience.
    - I am intending to receive my Wilderness First Aid (WFA) certification late Summer 2025

    3. Skills gained from my schooling
    - I received my Bachelors degree in Political Science with minors in Philosophy and Criminal Justice. I interned at a personal injury law firm, where I wrote and managed many different kinds of legal documents. While I know most hosts don't need any help in this field, these skills have made me exceptionally good at problem solving and critical thinking.
    - Teamwork was a large focus in my education. I work very well with others. When I am in a leadership position, I work very hard to encourage everyone to share their thoughts and create an environment where people feel safe to do so.
