  • Description

    Hello!

My name is Lora and I am heading to New Zealand on the 9th of February. My current plan is to be based on the North island and then slowly make my way South to explore Te Waipounamu. I grew up in Wales in a rural area surrounded by nature so I am very comfortable in remote settings.

I have multiple experiences working on Scottish and Welsh nature reserves which has given me excellent DIY and maintenence skills. I have repaired deer fences, dissmantled and processed fences, brushcut farmland for breeding waders, cut down non-native conifers in peatlands and assisted in general site repairs.

In my most recent role as a ranger on Handa island I carried out practical tasks to maintain the reserve. This included path maintanence, building new sections of boardwalk, machine maintenence and many DIY skills. Living on an island has taught me to be very adaptable. When things go wrong in the accommodation such as toilet systems not working or sinks not draining, I have fixed these issues with ease. I am happy to give anything a go and get stuck in!

In other roles and experiences I have looked after livestock including highland cows and wild ponies. I have attended a livestock welfare training course for a previous role where I would check the welfare of the stock grazing the land. My other job experiences include, gardening, cleaning, painting and redecorating, coaching sport to young people and teaching bushcraft skills to children aged 8-16.

I have multiple experiences of living communally and cooking altogether. I have spent two seasons on Handa island where communal living is a big part of island life. We would take it in turns to cook each evening which sometimes involved cooking for up to 14 people. I have an approachable and laid back attitude which is ideal in a communal living setup.

I love spending time outdoors walking, running, cycling, climbing, sailing and outdoor swimming. I like to stay active and healthy in any way I can. I also enjoy quiet times sitting and reading or going for gentle strolls.

please feel free to ask me any questions about myself or skills and experiences.

My most recent role as a ranger on a remote scottish Island invovlved lots of DIY and maintenence skills. All the practical work on the island was carried out by myself and teams of volunteers by hand. We built new boardwalk sections, repaire old footpath sections, process and de-nailed wood, repaired any damage to the accommodation and resolved any plumbing issues.

In a previous role as a fieldwork assistant for a Red Squirrel research project in the Scottish highlands I worked outdoors all day and coped with the forever-changing Highland conditions. It also involved navigational skills so I am able to read maps and use a compass or GPS to navigate.

I have two previous workaway experiences. One in Norway with a charity called 'In the Same Boat' which involved clearing ocean plastic from isolated areas of the Norwegian coastline. I learnt a lot of new skills during this experience like how to cook for groups of people (we often cooked for 10+ people most days). I also learnt a lot about sailing and safety procedures when being out at sea for a long time. The other experience was as a farm assistant in Spain helping with harvesting, maintenence, feeding farm animals and gardening.

I have excellent customer service and hospitality skills from working in a gift shop and cafe. I love talking to new people and finding out more about their life. My most recent role was public facing as we had tourists who came to visit the island. Myself or volunteers on the island would greet the tourists and give an introductory talk about the island and what widllife they might see.

I enjoy cooking for myself and other people. I have lived communally with people from all walks of life and enjoy sharing stories and cultures through cooking together.
