  • Description

Hello! I’m Lauren, 23, and Scottish born and raised. I’m an aspiring ecologist/conservationist and am absolutely fascinated by our wold. I value music and art above all else and would pay a high price to be able to read my favourite books again for the first time. I love people and community focused living especially when nature is included, I'm really hoping to meet some interesting and like-minded people through workaway and gain an insight/understanding of different ways of living!

I've been lucky enough to have done a fair bit of exploring, from Iceland to Guyana and have some great stories to share. For the last 7 months I have been living in the Scottish highlands as a full time volunteer for a conservation charity and have loved every second.

I have skills in animal care having grown up on a farm steading in the Southside of Glasgow with horses, chickens, and dogs to name a few but not all. I have a strong work ethic having worked for my family business (Dog kennels and daycare) from a young age. I enjoy hard, rewarding work especially in the outdoors but really am just happy to be put to work and can keep myself busy off my own initiative. I pride myself in being a quick learner and am super keen to learn new skills.

I have strong leadership and teamwork skills, having lead a student expedition to the rainforests of South America where I camped off grid for 2 months and seen some of the most incredible wildlife on the planet.

Some nitty gritty bits, I have a BSc in Immunology from the University of Glasgow and a special interest in animal diseases, ecology, and conservation. I am certified in outdoor first aid and just renewed my 3yr certificate in Aug 2025. Full (and clean) drivers license and have certified training in mental health awareness and suicide prevention.

I'm really excited to meet new people and places through workaway and think I would make a great addition to your team!

  • More details about your skills

Growing up on a farm has given me a great work ethic, I’ve worked in my family’s dog boarding and daycare facility from a young age so have spent a lot of time with dogs of all breeds and size's! Cleaning, walking, playing, feeding and talking to customers are all parts of the job that I am more than comfortable with. I’m a total animal lover also looking after the few horses we keep on the farm, as well as chickens, cats, and guinea pigs.

I also have experience with food prep previously working in a kiosk, and currently work in a small community pharmacy as a dispenser where I have been for the last 4 years.

Last year I graduated from the University of Glasgow with a BSc Honours in Immunology, during my studies I was able to have incredible experiences firstly travelling to Iceland in my second year to undertake biological research for 6 weeks at a remote field station with a team of 5 other students. The following year I led my own expedition to the Kanuku Mountains protected area in Guyana where myself and 6 other students camped off grid within the Rainforest for 2 months and carried out numerous research projects with my own project investigating bacterial diseases in bats. These experiences taught me independence, leadership, and organisation. Most importantly they taught me about myself and my own values in life, community, friendship, and nature, is what gives me fulfilment and I’m striving to live a life full of those things!

Finally, a couple certificates and other things to note! I am fully certified in outdoor first aid, and have completed courses on suicide prevention and supporting victims of sexual assault, leading me to achieve a mental health ambassador certificate from my university.
