Interested in practical work but am happy to learn new skills if it helps out on anywhere I visit. I enjoyed my time in Germany and Ireland last year and hope to do more workaway again this year.

  • Description

    Hi,

I've worked as a Project Ranger on Sheffield's Allotment sites for over 22 years and took voluntary redundancy from my role to gain new experiences. I'm looking to continue working in the Environmental Sector as it's what I enjoy doing but also looking to gain experience of working with animals and/or constructing or improving buildings as I'm possibly interested in running my own smallholding in the future.

Happy to work somewhere remote too as enjoyed my time as a voluntary Warden for the National Trust in South East Cornwall some years ago. Solitude won't be a problem for me but neither will be socialising and contributing to cooking and cleaning.

My first workaway experience was from mid June to early August where I helped out with animals such as Donkeys, Llamas and Camels at Projekt Sultan in Breitenborn, Hessen, Germany. This was followed by a different experience doing up an old house and gardening for 3 weeks in Ziegenhain, Hessen. I then did a workaway in Ireland during November 23 and enjoyed my time with all of my hosts, meeting new people and doing different things. I feel that I've benefited a lot from these and I look forward to new experiences and meeting future hosts/friends.

I'm currently doing temporary agency work for my old employer in England but plan to do another workaway over the Summer/Autumn 24. Due to Brexit I can only do 90 out of 180 days in the EU.

    Thanks,

    Bob

  • More details about your skills

Worked in a variety of outdoor settings with a variety of tools and machinery. Current renewed and in-date certificates for Chainsaw & small tree felling, Strimmer/Bruchcutter/Clearing Saw & Pesticide Application (knapsack, injection, stump treatment). I've treated and mostly eradicated Japanese Knotweed on allotment sites over the years.

Also been trained in use of lawn mowers, bank commanders, pole pruners, woodchippers, tractor driving and familiarisation.

Clean UK Driving Licence including trailer use.

I like to try my hand at most things practical and enjoyed helping out a friend do up their flat in Whitby during 2022. Also happy to try to learn a language(s), it's never been my strong point but feel it's time to push myself in this area.

Covered as Allotment Officer on a couple of occasions which helped further develop my people and budgetary skills if needed.

  • What else ...

Always up for a game of chess and enjoy playing card and board games. Like a good read too.

Did the Great North Run (half marathon) in 2018 and have since kept up running through doing a 5k or parkrun most weeks.

Enjoyed being a voluntary gate steward for Oxfam at four Glastonbury Festivals in the mid to late 1990's.

Like to visit different places and take in the different cultures and environments of where I go.
