Hey there, I hope you’re doing well. Welcome to my profile!

My name is Katharina, a 23-year-old from Germany with an avid passion for travelling and all things nature.

I started using Workaway three years ago as I was finishing up school, very uncertain about where life would take me next. I’ve spent a year living and working in a couple countries in Europe - the UK, Ireland, France and the Netherlands - and came back with a newfound zest for life and a lot of experience that I felt like I was lacking before.

At the moment I’m busy with university, but whenever summer rolls around I can’t help but look forward to another little trip. I visited so many places, met a bunch of lovely people and had such a good time during my year abroad that I can’t see myself stopping anytime soon.

My current goal is to slowly make my way around the continent, meet and get to know other people, learn more about different cultures and find out what else the world has to offer.

I’m excited about what the future will bring and look forward to speaking to you!

I’ve been actively speaking English for a decade and recently got certified for language level C1. German is my mother tongue, so I’m doing pretty well there. I used to take French in school and briefly started teaching myself Russian a couple years back, but neither of those two stuck around.

I love learning new skills and do so the quickest through physical practice. While I may be lacking knowledge in some areas, I do not lack motivation and a willingness to learn!

I have some experience in the gastronomy industry; both working as a waiter in a couple different places and, on a single occasion, as a cook.

During my time in Ireland I had the opportunity to work in a Bed & Breakfast for four months and got introduced to the basics of commercial housekeeping.

I know a thing or two about gardening, animal care and have no problem with getting my hands dirty.

One thing I would love to learn more about is anything related to carpentry and all things DIY.

I really enjoy playing card games and I’m always up for a match of table tennis. I’ve been playing the accordion for a decade and spend a big portion of my free time drawing, taking long walks and driving around on my bicycle.

I had the luck of staying with Suzie and Chris near Garlieston for roughly three weeks during October 2022 and, after spending some more time in Scotland, England and just recently Ireland, finally got around to putting my immense gratitude into words and writing this long overdue review of my first ever experience with Workaway!

Due to an… read more abrupt cancellation from my previous host after my arrival in the UK, I was unexpectedly left on my own for a few weeks which I spent exploring the highlands and some of the bigger cities while searching for a timely alternative.
When I contacted Suzie, she quickly understood my situation and offered to take me in a few days later. After a short bus ride I was picked up from a nearby town and had a very talkative ride to their home. She was an absolute joy to listen to and very forgiving regarding my then still quite strong accent.

Shortly after I was greeted by and introduced to her family, their lively dog Buddy and a friendly American woman staying for a few weeks who I later found out shared my love for books and hiking. The caravan we got to spend our nights in was cozy and had no problems fitting in the giant piece of luggage I had with me at the time, although we were encouraged to spend our off-time in their lovely house, exploring the local scenery or wandering through some of the local towns whenever a lift was kindly offered anyway.

Between morning hours filled with different types of house- or farm work like taking care of a new four-headed pack of alpacas or simple gardening framed by delicious meals and frequent visits to the nearby village of Wigtown, the days flew by so very quickly; before I could even blink, it was Halloween night and time to move on to my next adventure. We said our dear farewells, I was endowed with a bag full of Chris' scrumptious home-made sandwiches for my journey and brought to my bus stop before making my way down to England.

I had an absolutely marvelous time with Suzie, Chris, their son and their animals and will be eternally grateful for their help. Though I am not that much of a writer, I hope my small review got across why I felt this way and why I didn't hesitate a second to point out their excellence when given the opportunity. They are a lovely and benevolent couple that is more than deserving of any kind word that is sent their way and I wholeheartedly wish them the best!

Katharina was absolutely Excellent.She had an interest in every thing no matter how big or how small.
She not alone had a great work ethic but expressed a wonderful interest in our Culture and Heritage.
It was a pity her time here was so short.
