  • Description

Hey there kind stranger, welcome to my profile! ✨

My name is Katharina, a 21-year-old from Germany with an avid passion for history, art, travelling and things nature.

Since finishing my last year of school and growing out of my teens I had been quite indecisive about the next upcoming steps in my life. After a bit of introspection, I realized rather quickly that I couldn't settle for a field of study just yet, be it my lack of general life experience or my wide range of interests. A friend of mine had introduced me to Workaway a couple weeks earlier, opening up the possibility of taking my soul-searching abroad.

My current ambitions are to travel around Europe as a means to improve my English and French, meet and get to know people, learn more about different cultures and local history and become the capable and self-assured person I always dreamed of being.

This little personal odyssey I have been on since the start of September 2022 which has led me through the Scottish Highlands, all the way to Loch Ness, the English countryside, famous cities like London and Edinburgh and now the Emerald Isles has been a great learning experience for someone previously quite inexperienced with the concept of international travel. I've had the luck of running into a lot of amazing people that I still stay in contact with and hundreds more that have made my time wherever I happened to settle down for a while unbelievable enjoyable; be it a minute of small talk while making use of my sketchbook in a café, an unexpected act of kindness in a shop or a shared quick laugh over an overheard conversation on the street.

I am very thankful for getting the opportunity to join people in their daily lifes, to travel around the continent with my backpack, a small piece of luggage and the only regret being that my accordion didn't fit into my pocket; eager to jump headfirst into adventure and have a glimpse at what our beautiful world has to offer.

I am incredible excited what the near future will bring and look forward to speaking to you!

More details about my language interests
As previously noted my primary aim is to polish up my English to leave me with a metaphorical base kit for my later travels through Europe; however my developing interest in languages definitely does not stop there. While English and French are the only foreign languages I have any considerable knowledge in, though the following quite minor, I would be more than happy to learn anything about any language I come across!

  • More details about your skills

I love learning new skills and do so the quickest through physical practice.

Most of my experience related to traditional work and jobbing is based around the gastronomy industry and derived from my two previous part-time jobs as a waitress in a cafe and general wildcard in a bakery, tallying to roughly half a year respectively.
During my time in Ireland I also had the opportunity to work in a Bed & Breakfast for four consecutive months and got introduced to the basics of commercial housekeeping through a lovely teacher and plenty of repetition.

In addition to the basics of home care and doing day-to-day chores I do have a bit of know-how regarding taking care of both children and small pets.
Two of my main areas of expertise are both practical and digital artistic projects; while I have always practiced this primarily as a hobby I did take on minor commissions before.

While I wouldn’t call myself a gardening expert by any means I have picked up a lot from my parents on how to properly tend to a garden filled with all kinds of flowers and the inevitable giant amount of weeds; something that I happened to practice a lot during my stay in the United Kingdom and, coupled with animal keeping, got to accumulate a lot of new knowledge in.

One specific area of strong personal interest I would love to learn more about is anything related to carpentry and renovation, though I already had the luck of gathering a bit of experience in general maintenance, specifically painting and mural work.

When it comes to taking care of myself I know a thing or two about cooking, have always held proper cleanliness in high regard and have no problems with covering longer distances to buy groceries and run errands; here it should be noted that I unfortunately didn't manage to finish my drivers license in time for my travels and would be reliant on public transport, biking and walking.

Outside of that I'm a hard worker and more than willing to help out any way I can with no problem to get my hands dirty. While I may be lacking in practical knowledge, I do not lack motivation and an unending willingness to learn!

  • What else ...

I loved playing card and board games with my family over the past few years and have found my favorites in UNO and Rommé. I'm always up for a round of table tennis, even though I sadly made the mistake of not taking my set with me!

Since my grandfather had the luck of being passed down and taught how to play an accordion I received the same treatment for roughly ten years. If you happen to have one catching dust in your attic I would love to give it a try and even teach you a few things if you share the interest; though I may have gotten rusty after a few months away from home! :)
