  • Description

We are a couple who have been together for 6 years, but close friends for over 10, who met in New Zealand where we worked together.

In 2018 we left the Pacific to travel through Europe for a year. We did a lot of pet sitting and visited friends and family until we eventually ran out of money and ended up in the UK just before the pandemic. We have been here the last 4 years working and saving so we can go on another adventure, this time aiming for 2 years and we’d like to mix it up with house sitting and workaways.

Eventually, we would like to return to Australia and explore a self-sufficient lifestyle and we feel workaways would be an amazing experience to learn how other people have turned their dreams into realities.

    Bradford
Although I was born just north of Sydney, Australia, I have spent more than half my adult life living in other countries. I love travel, exploration, and new experiences in my life.
While I have had several careers, I found my passion when I studied Food Science in Australia where I majored in brewing science. I have worked in breweries across New Zealand, Australia, and the UK- from tiny craft breweries to large industrial breweries...

    Kat
I was born and raised in the deep south of Austria but a chance uni placement in New Zealand opened my eyes to other worlds and I have been exploring them ever since! I started my career in molecular biology and worked as a research scientist in plant viruses. I grabbed an opportunity to switch to the brewing industry (where I met Bradford) and soon developed a passion for sensory science and statistics. When I moved to the UK I started working in Innovation at a flavour house (a company that makes food flavours and perfume ingredients).

    Bradford
My passions (apart from travel) include fermentation science - from meat curing, cheese making, brewing, distilling, to pickling. I am an amateur woodworker, bookbinder, weaver, and leatherworker. In the past, I have renovated a house in Australia so I’m comfortable with tools and basic construction.

    Kat
I am excited about textile science and I am an accomplished seamstress and knitter. I have recently taken up wool spinning and natural dyeing to underpin my love of the craft. I also used to be a semi-professional Latin dancer and have studied dance in Austria, Italy, and New Zealand (where I also taught briefly). My artistic interests have expanded to include lino printing, silk screen printing and calligraphy as well as dabbling in pottery painting.

  • What else ...

We’re both scientists and so we’re both very grounded, but we feel the planet has lost its way a bit. We are tired of the corporate work model and want to understand how we can use science to work towards supporting small community and self-sufficient living.

We are both passionate foodies and love exploring new ideas, fusion, and traditional foods from the places we visit. We lean towards ethical farming practices and Bradford has been known to butcher a deer or pheasant from time to time with meat obtained from environmental culling.

We are keen gardeners and have aimed to be semi-self-sufficient in summer in the UK having both an allotment and vegetable garden to grow our food.
