  • Description

    Hey folks,

My name is Jay and I am 45 years old. I am new to the workaway site as of May '23.
I have always enjoyed creative activities including music, cooking, drama, writing and woodwork. Formally a professional musician, at the moment I am enjoying photography and am a semi professional portrait artist. I am proud to have had several pieces of my work included in local exhibitions and am currently working towards my own exhibition.

I have been living in Ireland for 15 years, the last 2 and a half of which, I have been living on a small organic permaculture farm, as a guest in the guesthouse and an unofficial workawayer, where I have contributed to the running of the place by; assisting and running projects, including building a poly tunnel and a mobile chicken coop; performing maintenance like painting/decorating and making general repairs (no plumbing or electrical experience); learning to drive the tractor, planting, weeding and harvesting crops; sign writing and other artistic projects; helping with the animals, cleaning out, moving around and building feeders, habitats and such; helping with the management of the guesthouse, including hosting, cooking, cleaning etc.
I have also, recently, been leading guided meditations, for guests and workers, on the farm.
Living on the farm has been the closest I've ever lived to my ideal existence and I wish to explore, more, what that means to me.
I enjoy working with people, creative problem solving and expanding my skill set.
I love all animals and have a small friendly dog with me.
I am known to occasionally break out the guitar still and sing a few soulful melodies, from time to time, if someone gives my arm a little twist.

I look forward to sharing some experiences with the right host.

  • More details about your skills

I am good with my hands:
Experienced with small to medium carpentry projects using hand or electric tools (really prefer an electric screwdriver though!😂)
Experienced painter for either creative or decorating purposes.
Limited experience with small tractor/farm machinery.
    Limited experience with crops.
Have built a dry stone raised bed.
Very good in the kitchen (mostly vegetarian experiments), once I know my way around and who I'm cooking for.
I am, formally, a professional musician.

I am good with my brain:
I love problem solving, especially with limited resources.
    I am a capable team leader/player.
I have a good sense of humour and an empathic nature.
If I'm going to learn something, I'm likely to learn it very quickly.

I am inclined to work deliberately and perform to my best, rather than rush a job.
I refer to myself as a recovering perfectionist and though the phrase 'that'll do' can still sometimes make me shudder, I am now capable of a 'that'll do' job, when required.

    ...but it makes me shudder.😄

    46

  • What else ...

I do love social activities, although I prefer a quiet, rather than noisy environment, as a problem with my ears leaves me sensitive to loud noises or extended exposure to lots of sound; hence the change from musician to painter
I have recently found a love of boardgames of pretty much any kind. I do like movies too.
I love hugs. I love laughing. I also love a deep conversation. I love animals. I find people incredibly interesting animals.
