Hello, I am Hikari from Japan, living in UK since 2017.
I have used workaway back in 2016 as a residential student support at a school in Denmark as a solo traveler, and it was wonderful! After 9 years, now I have become a mother, my kids have grown a bit, and have come up with trying workaway as a family!
We are a family of four - my husband, a 7 years olf son (born in 2018), and a 5 years old daughter (born in 2020).
We are currently looking for a place to visit and I tell you a bit more about ourselves.
Who we are looking for:
- A host who can acommodate at least my 7 years old son and me (mother), and ideally my 5 years old daughter too.
- A good family who has similar age with our kids (5 and 7)
- A host who live with nature
- A host who can communicate in English (No need to be fluent/native)
Duration of our stay:
- During summer 2025
- 3 weeks or more (My kids need to build 1-1 relationship with you and assurance)
- Flexible with dates as long as it's sometime from the end of July - the end of August while it is school summer holiday
The reason we want to try workaway bringing my child(ren):
- Especially my son to build confidence in communication with others
- To let my kids experience different environment and natural life.
My background:
- Experience in a residential volunteer community, engaging in gardening, kindling, cooking for many people. cleaning, supporting educational workshops for children
- Internship at art studio (helping his artworks and fundraising project)
- Masters degree in education
- International sales and marketing
Things we can offer:
- I am open to help with anything you need. Garden help, playing with kids, cooking, cleaning etc. If you like Japanese food I can cook;)

This 2025 summer workaway is not only for fun for myself and kids, but more for building my 7 years old son's communicative confidence. We are a Japanese family (including my husband) living in UK, my children were both born here. He is very cheeky, helps me always, listens well, smart, and loves making paper airplanes just like other boys. Our home is always with full of laughter and chat by my lovely children. HOWEVER, my son does not speak any English at all outside home.
Although he attends local school without any problem, he spends his day without talking with anyone and his silence worries us a lot. Still he understands every English conversation, and follows all the direction and plays happily with other children without any problem.
I have talked about this to his teachers, but for now they all say it should be ok. I have not taken him doctor yet, but he is like selective mutism in English. (He speaks a lot in Japanese! Being bilingual should be just hard for him although he lives in UK) For this, I assume he is like a perfectionist and afraid of making mistakes just like a teenage child. I can wait for him to be ready and believe time solves this matter as he grows more. Yet this summer I would like to try living with another family with children and hopefully he finds it is a happy and safe thing to be with others and open his mind, by being a bit away from 100% Japanese life at his home in UK. As we live in a normal house, life in nature will be a plus as well.
Thanks for reading, it may sound a bit heavy but I just wanted to be honest about how we are and clarify our workaway purpose for this summer. Other than this we are a happy family with a bit shy kids. My English is fluent, kids understand all English conversation, my daughter speaks some English when adults aren't around so I hope we can have a good time together:)Languages
