    Travelling

  • Description

Hello, I'm Harry from Bedfordshire in South-East England. I have been travelling in Latin America since September 2024. I am currently in Brazil and am hoping to settle somewhere for 1-3 months, to spend some time to familiarise myself with a place and meet new people, exchanging culture, language and stories.

I would describe myself as a friendly, open-minded, kind and hardworking individual. I am happy to ‘get my hands dirty’ and undertake laborious jobs, which I enjoy applying myself to. I am open to Workaway entailing hands-on work, but also technical, computer-based work as well as language teaching. I would like to work within NGO’s and charities as a career, so any experiences working within these would especially appeal to me. I can speak both Spanish and Portuguese to an intermediate level.

I started my current trip after finishing a Masters in Security Studies, which is a political science degree focussed on global security, development, and issues such as protest trends. Before this, I completed a degree in Politics and Philosophy. I thoroughly enjoyed both of these degrees, as they allowed me to gain a deep understanding of cultures from around the world, and enhanced the drive within me to travel as much as possible. However, I believe to truly understand a culture and a place, it is necessary to spend a prolonged period there, and also to give something of yourself to this place. Volunteering is the perfect combination of this, as it allows strong cultural exchange, but also ensures I am providing something to the places through which I travel.

My work experience is mainly retail based, as I held a role as a customer assistant in a supermarket throughout my studies. This enhanced my communicate skills and ability to work in a team. I also have some experience working in construction, as I worked for my father’s steel fitting company during the school holidays for 2 months when I was 16. As a result I have basic experience of working in construction, so I am confident in completing D.I.Y jobs. In addition, I am a keen sportsman, and I worked as a youth football referee for 2 years. This required me to communicate effectively with children, whilst also taking responsibility for their safety.

Despite not having previous experience in working on an eco-project, I am really interested in learning about sustainability and alternative lifestyles. I am very passionate about protecting and conserving the environment, as I believe that anybody with a desire to travel and see the world, should also be motivated to protect it. Furthermore, though I have limited marketing experience, I would be keen to help with this, as I believe my knowledge of the world and other cultures would be a great help.

I am always willing and keen to work hard and efficiently. I have worked successfully as part of a team and independently, so I am used to using my initiative or communicating with others to complete tasks. I take pride in working to the best of my ability and achieving tasks to a high standard. Alongside this, to me, the greatest appeal of travelling is to meet new people, to broaden understanding of different cultures and different people. To achieve this, I would like to find a Workaway in which I can work hard and give something of myself, whilst also learning from others and having new experiences.

In conclusion, my passion for taking part in a Workaway experience is to meet new people, have new experiences and try to give something of myself whilst doing this. Thank you for reading my profile.

More details about my language interests
I am a native English speaker, and have been in Latin America for the past 6 months. During this time I have attended both Spanish and Portuguese schools, and am very keen to advance both of these languages. I am aware that English people are less competent in speaking other languages, and am very keen to return from my trip with a strong grasp of both Portuguese and Spanish.
