Description
We are a family of four, Laura (30), Steven (32), Luka (3.5) and Niko (1). As a family, we love reading, gardening, being outdoors, and cooking. Steven and I have been married for nine years this June. We did a big workaway trip (four months in Europe) in 2019 and it was one of the best experiences of our lives. We want to recreate a trip like that, this time with our two boys! Luka is a fabulous helper. We live on a homestead and he assists us in planting, harvesting, weeding, and cooking. Niko is very chill and enjoys to nap on mommy or daddy's back or babble to us from his swing while we work. If you are a workaway host who is willing to host families, we believe our boys would be a wonderful addition to your projects as they love being outside and helping us with whatever we are doing. Steven and I both have a background in agriculture via our university education and our experiences working on many different farms in many different countries during the past 12 years. We are hard working, dependable, independent, laid back, and social. We would love to join in on your daily family rhythms and help out in whatever way you need. Our number one goal for this trip is to spend a lot of time outside, learning from new people and exposing our kids to all different cultures and ways of life.

Laura: degree in environmental science, extensive background knowledge of organic vegetable farming, some knowledge of organic fruit farming, knowledge of growing using a hydroponic system, avid (amateur) chef, and passion for foraging food from the wild. I also run a business selling sourdough bread and other farm products to our local community.

Steven: degrees in both math and engineering, very handy with building/construction, background knowledge of organic vegetable farming, knowledge of hydroponics, very skilled in doing anything with numbers/spreadsheets, and really just a jack of all trades! (This is Laura, bragging about his skills:) )

There are some people that come in to your lives that you know will stay with you, in your hearts, forever - Laura and Steven are these people.

They came to us as 'Last minute workawayers' and it couldn't have been a better last minute decision! From the moment they arrived, I knew it would be amazing and I was not disappointed. Laura and Steven… read more are some of the hardest workers we have ever had (we have had around 50 workawayers now). I have a big list of jobs on the fridge and never have I had workawayers actually add to this list - Apparently my list was not long enough for this amazing couple!!

They stayed with us for 3 weeks and in that time they achieved a huge amount, including building a pitched roof for my chicken coop (Steven built the frame from scratch and used ceramic roof tiles - it's a work of art - spoilt chickens!), dug out a path to our back gate, which has probably been untouched for over 70 years and did a huge amount of gardening and decorating. Laura completely changed the look of our 'Petite Maison', which we want to use as a gite one day, to the point where I feel we can actually get it up for rent now. She has an exceptional eye for interior design. She also helped me lots in the kitchen - from clearing out my fridge and cupboards (she is very organised), to teaching me how to make sourdough. She also shared my love for foraging/living off the land and we had lots of fun afternoons making jam from berries we'd foraged and we even made some Rose Hip beauty oil. She has a wealth of knowledge about plants and gardens and helped me enormously with my fledgling potager.

Laura and Steven also orchestrated an incredible evening for my husband and me. We don't get to spend much time together as he is in the army and when he does come home, we have a house full of workawayers. They recognised this and organised a surprise 'mini retreat' for us in our gite. They cooked a 4 course meal with some of the other workawayers and gave us some precious time on our own. We were totally blown away by their kindness and genorisity and it is something that we will remember for the rest of our lives.

They became family to us during their stay and we cannot thank them enough for everything they did - the enormous amount of work, but also the love and friendship they showed us. It was definitely one of the hardest goodbyes I've ever had to give, but I know that I will see this amazing couple again soon.
It goes without saying that I recommend Laura and Steven to any other workaway host, just don't hold on to them too long as I want them back here!
