Hi there,

so nice to meet you! My name is Fabiola (they/she) but I mostly go by Lola, and I am 25 years old. I am originally from Germany, but have lived in Namibia; The Netherlands, the US and Canada for a while. I studied Environmental Sciences and Sustainability as a bachelor, and just completed a master in Community Studies last summer.

I am a hobby cook and baker, enjoy being outdoors and gardening. I worked on a farm during parts of my studies as I am very interested in food security, urban farming and community gardens. I am a passionate climate activist that throws around way too many abbreviations around climate issues and loves a good check-in before a meeting to understand how humans around me feel. I have moved around quite a bit in the past eight years and am searching for communities to become home wherever I go. Excited to meet you!

I love hiking and climbing (I am more of a "let's go out and climb up somewhere and try to not kill ourselves" type of person rather than climibing as a sport). I love animals and nature, gardening and being by the water.

I love hearing people's stories and understanding their paths of life. I love playing board games and making music together. I would love to learn about whatever you would like to share with me - there is so much to learn!

Staying with Stan (and Nala) was the best experience I could have wished for! Having to move out of my student housing in early December and not having a place to stay during Christmas time, Stan provided me with a home for two weeks. He is one of the kindest, most generous and interesting people I have ever met and it was a true honor to be able… read more to get to know him and feel at home in his beautiful house.

Stan offers his guest a true international experience, his house is always full of amazing people from all over. Even in times of the pandemic, he brings the world to his home - in a way that, at the same time, keeps everyone safe. Something that I highly appreciated! The other guests I stayed with at his place were not only fun people to be around, but they truly inspired me. We all had a lot of fun together!

If I would have to summarize our main („work“) tasks with Stan, it would probably be „making the most of the time in the Bay area“ and „being happy“ 😊 His house is not only beautifully built and furnished (with a stunning view), it also welcomes its guests with a calm and joyful atmosphere. The kitchen often became the source of delicious meals prepared together by our small group of guests – always cheered on by Stan and thoroughly supervised by two curious dogs.

During my time in Walnut Creek, I got the chance to visit San Francisco multiple times (also by bike – Stan is well equipped). We went hiking at Mount Diablo and in John Muir Forest, and Stan never got tired of driving us around 😊 Walking the dogs in the neighborhood and also Berkeley completed the amazing experience!

I really appreciated that Stan provided a space and home for me to also work on my own projects (grad school applications) and never made me feel like I was not contributing enough in the household. We had great conversations about social media, climate activism, migration, building projects and much more. Stan was so involved and interested in all our projects – from the research of one guest to the Master thesis of another guest who just got accepted into a great grad school (congrats again!!). But not only that, Stan himself also had great stories to tell – and sometimes he is a little too humble to actually finish them. Make sure to ask him about his world travels when you stay at his place. His experiences are amazing!

Overall, Stan is an extraordinary human being and his kindness keeps fascinating me to this day. Stan does not hesitate to go the extra mile to support those he cares about. And he managed to make me feel like I actually have a home to return to any time in the Bay. We are still in contact and I hope that will stay the case for a long time! Stan, thank you so much – and I hope to see you in Germany soon 😊 You are always welcome! And give Nala a hug from me!
