Hi!
I'm Andrea, 18 years old and I live near Munich, Germany. I recently graduated high school and am currently taking a gap year.
I love to travel and explore new places which is why I decided to solo travel through South America after my graduation. The continent specifically interests me as I have some friends there from an exchange year in Canada during 11th grade and I want to learn Spanish. And of course the vastly different landscapes and cities of the continent seem absolutely magical!
I do not know yet what I want to study in university after my gap year, therefore I am hoping to find out more about which working environments (for example working with children/working with adults, working outside/working indoors, etc.) I prefer. I hope to find out more about this while doing meaningful work through volunteering experiences with Workaway.

I am a friendly person and am always excited to learn more about other cultures while sharing my own. I am very open-minded and hope to meet other open-minded people on my travels as well. I love to try new skills (such as for example painting a wall) and improve the ones I already have some knowledge of.

I want to learn Spanish as it is one of the most spoken languages in the world as well as the mogher tongue of a close friend of mine. I also think it's very helpful to know as many languages as possible so I always try to learn at least a few words of the language in every country I visit! I am able to help others with learning or improving their German or English if that is wanted.

I have experience in tutoring children (mostly maths, sometimes English) and have a Cambridge Certificate of level C2 in English. I enjoy helping others - whether that is explaining the topics of an exam to my friends 10 minutes before its beginning or helping an 8th grader with his maths homework and explaining English grammar to him.
I have always liked doing photography from doing it with my phone to doing it with my dad's camera to more recently getting my own camera with more equipment. I love to capture the world through my eyes and show my experiences in a creative way.
I also enjoy cooking and baking as well as reading, music and singing. I'm always open for adventures and will find some way or another to achieve my goals.

Overall, I had an amazing time volunteering in Quillabamba for a month. It was also my first volunteering I've ever done.
However, one thing you should realize, is that her Workaway profile as of now is not up to date. The Arts Academy doesn't really exist anymore since about 2 or 3 months ago. The only thing "left" of the Arts Academy are the … read more music classes, piano to be specific. However, if you know how to play the guitar, you might also teach some of the kids a little bit of guitar instead of piano. The music classes are always in the afternoon at Jennifer's house, depending on the day usually either from 3pm or 4pm to 6pm. In the mornings, you always go to the school to help with teaching English. How many hours you help at school in the mornings depends on how many or if your doing classes in her house in the afternoon. There are also English tutoring classes at her house in the afternoon so if you don't know how to play the piano, you'll likely help with those. The amount of assistance you're giving in school depends on your experience level. My first 2 weeks in Quillabamba there were 2 more volunteers so we had almost all of the classes at school completely by ourselves. When I was alone for about 1½ weeks I usually just controlled if the kids were doing the tasks that Jennifer gave them. In my last few days when I was getting a little more confident, she also gave me 1 or 2 classes to teach myself, meaning I held the classes alone with materials that Jennifer gave me (worksheets, a game to play, a powerpoint presentation, etc.).
Even though I didn't speak any Spanish at all when coming to Quillabamba, I never felt completely left alone or overwhelmed. The classes were definitely very challenging and hard at times but I felt like Jennifer always knew really well what I was gonna be able to do and what would be too much at each stage. Jennifer works a lot everyday so the communication before arriving was a bit difficult. Once you're there you're also not gonna talk to her too much because she's usually either working or sleeping. But if you have any questions or wishes you can always ask her. She was also very flexible with the hours of help, for example the weekend I went to Machu Picchu she gave me Friday completely off so I could spend another night before in Cocalmayo thermal baths (highly recommend!). During the weekend where I was the only volunteer, she took me to a teacher's meet-up at a cocoa / coffee festival and to some nearby waterfalls with her own motorcycle.
Some places I highly recommend going if you're volunteering in Quillabamba are: Illapani waterfalls (weekend day trip), coffee and cocoa festival in Samboray (happens every last weekend of the month), swimming in some pools in town (the closest one is Piscina Municipal), the café right across the street from ABARROTES & LIBRERIA LUAL (it's very close to the school and has really good juices and cremoladas) and the Mirador La Cruz! If you are staying in Quillabamba for a bit longer, I definitely also recommend doing a weekend trip to Vilcabamba Vitcos - the last Inca resistance place. It's a huge complex and almost no tourists at all (basically like an empty Machu Picchu). Excavations are still ongoing!
