  • Description

    Hi dear possible future host!

I'm Esther, and I'm from Amsterdam. I volunteer regularly at a city farm/petting zoo, where they teach children about farm animals, and nature in the city. I like going to workshops on edible plants, and excursions to learn more about plants, mushrooms, birds, animals, and trees.

I love going on long hikes, especially through rugged terrain, forests, coastal paths and mountains. I still have a dream of going on a thru-hike, or at least a few-day-hike!

When I was little my mum and I lived on the Greek island of Zakynthos for a few years, and it feels a bit like my 'paradise lost': growing your own food, making your own bread, being close to animals and nature, living a more 'authentic' life. I feel like I miss my 'roots' sometimes ;-)

My dream is to one day live somewhere in the middle of nature, but first I want to learn more by helping others and experiencing different ways of life. So I thought I'd start with workawaying here and there, to see what it's like and to get to know new people, being close to nature, and doing something meaningful.

I'm not a party person and I prefer having a nice dinner with maybe a glass of wine, and then getting up at sunrise, instead of going to clubs packed with people and loud music. I am quite solitary and very independent and really love being on my own. I do like socializing though! I love to spend hours with friends philosophising and discussing history, psychology, politics, art, anything really!

I am kind, responsible and dedicated, and also dreamy and artistic, a conscientious worker, and a social person, (although I do need my time alone to recharge) and because I'm open minded and empathic I'm easy to get along with. And I have a good sense of humour!

I love cooking, and I always love learning new recipes and cooking techniques. I especially love Mediterranean, and I'm also a big fan of Indian food. I can make you some Dutch food, but it's a little bit boring ;-p

I've done quite a lot of cooking in social centres and on festivals, so I know how to cook for large groups and how to be quick and efficient and keep the kitchen spotless at the same time!

Because of working on the cityfarm I know a little about animal care, such as hoof trimming, giving anti-worm injections and getting rid of red mite (next to feeding and cleaning of course! ).

As part of a veg garden project in the city we run a little 'garden bar' where we sell coffee, juices, herbal teas, toasties, and local products. I sometimes do bar service and I really like to make our visitors feel welcome and cared for.

My mum has been ill for a long time before passing away in 2016, and because of this I have learned to take responsibility and to care for someone from a young age. I have a lot of affinity with the elderly and I like to help and support them as much as I can.

I love drawing and can do graphic design with the programs Photoshop and Illustrator. I also work with gouache, pencils, and pen and ink sometimes.

I've been trying to learn to play the banjo for years, and I can play a few songs, let's say 'slowly but surely' haha.

I have built a few websites with website builders like Wix and Weebly and a bit of Wordpress and I write copy for websites. I have done some work on SEO.

I love languages, everything about it, understanding different languages and alphabets, etymology, literature and poetry. I speak native level English and absolutely love English poetry and literature. My hero is Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and I know Rime of the Ancient Mariner by heart. I know a lot of poems by heart. I'm a bit of a nerd I guess...

I also speak Spanish quite well and can read and understand Catalan, and I can get by in German and French . I can read the Greek alphabet and Japanese characters. And of course I could teach you some Dutch, as it's my native tongue.

I like to do physical labour, it's the best exercise and leaves you with that wonderful 'tired but satisfied' feeling at the end of the day!
