  • Description

I am a 20 year college student in upstate New York. In University I major in History and Russian, but I would say my interests range into a great range of other categories, especially classic literature, poetry, and philosophy among other subjects.

Growing up on the south coast of Oregon, nature has always been a very important part of my life. There weren't many things to do in the local area and anything that offered a bit more was at least 2 hours away, but it's luckily a wonderful area full of rich nature and many hidden adventures. I spent many days hiking through emerald forests, running across beaches which seemed to stretch out for forever, and climbing up the rocky cliffs that lined them. Camping and kayaking in the mountains was always a family tradition. As a grew older and began to be able to go out on my own, these areas took on a new dimension. They were where I had the some of my most impactful discussions, found solace when I needed to be alone, and strengthened my best deepest friendships.

I then moved to upstate New York for University. I currently do not have a car and can't get into the wild as much as I would like to, but I have found a similar satisfaction in the academic opportunities and the friends I've made over the last few years.

I always want to be investing in activities and practices that allow for growth. I love learning and improving skills like playing guitar and writing, and I love learning about new subjects. I believe that life stays real and exciting when we make sure to include things that allow us to be more than we were yesterday, but I also think it is important that a person approaches such things in an engaging and satisfying way. Hard work and commitment are important, but I like to think that a challenging task done right leaves you without energy but never without inspiration.

More details about my language interests
Since I am studying Russian in school, I am very interested in improving my Russian, and it is one of my primary goals as I do workaway. I am doing a language study abroad program in Tallinn before I begin my workaway experience, during which I hope to improve my Russian ability from a beginning-intermediate level to a more substantial intermediate level.

  • More details about your skills

My dad built the second story of our house during my childhood and adolescents, so I was constantly surrounded by projects around the house. These would range from framing walls, putting up dry wall, and putting in new floors, to doing the plumbing and electricity. I would help out in these projects, often with the benefit of my dad's guidance and instruction. I would be wrong to suggest that I am very skilled at the tasks or even to suggest that I feel comfortable doing them at the moment, but they definitely impacted me. I learned a lot from these experiences, and my problem solving skills in such settings was greatly benefited. I have a level of understanding about these processes I otherwise wouldn't have, and think I could be good help if given some instruction.

My family's house only has wood burning stoves for heating, so my job for much of my life was to chop the firewood, carry it inside, make and maintain the two fires. We would also get a couple very large loads of wood every year. I would have to stack these. I think I've definitely gained an appreciation and enjoyment of physical labor from this.

I was also responsible for creating new spaces and upkeeping garden spaces for my mother. In addition to this I maintained our yard and hedges.

I can help out with chores throughout the house and general upkeep, and I can help out in the kitchen, especially when given a recipe or instructions for the dish.

Lastly, I worked in an elementary school for a few months following my graduation from high school, and I returned to this job in the spring of last year. I worked as an educational assistant in a life skills classroom with kids ages 5-11. I have always been good with kids, but I think this taught me how to take on roles that involve more responsibility.
