Description
My name is Alice (although I go by Alix) and I am from the UK. I’m taking a break from working to experience more of life. I am a Buddhist - meditation and contemplation are a big part of my life. I am seeking a loving relationship with all beings! This means all humans but also animals, plants, and the whole natural world. I believe that acting in service of others and cultivating gratitude is the path to freedom. On my travels I hope to be of service to other beings, as well as learn about other cultures and ways of life.
My background is in law. In the UK I practised as a human rights Lawyer specialising in rights for disabled children, adults, and carers.
I began my travels in June 2024 by volunteering at the Refugee Community Kitchen in Calais. I washed dishes, chopped vegetables, made huge flagons of tea, and helped distribute hot food in the refugee camps. This was a humbling experience to witness such destitution. I learned a lot from the team, who had such a positive attitude and worked really long hours to serve the community.
In July I volunteered at Berliner Tafel, which saves food waste from supermarkets and distributes it to refugees and other people living in poverty in Berlin. This was a huge operation! I worked in the warehouse helping to sort the bad food from the good and pack it up ready for distribution. I loved the sense of giving time and energy to benefit those most in need. Both these experiences helped me to understand the ethos of serving people in a way that upholds their dignity and shared humanity.Interests

More details about your skills
I practised as a Lawyer for 9 years in the UK before taking a break from work. I am good at research, writing, correspondence, and admin. I am well organised and can use IT with ease.
Before my travels I spent 18 months living and volunteering in a Buddhist retreat centre called Gaia House in Devon, the UK. As part of this role I organised the laundry and cleaning of the house, welcomed new arrivals, and supported the guests with anything they needed during their retreat. This was a varied role - lots of practical work, organising, admin, as well as using social skills and providing emotional support.
I am creative - I love to paint and draw. I am sociable and can get along with anyone. I work hard and I’m happy to get stuck in with whatever is needed - cleaning, laundry, washing dishes, gardening. I like to do tasks to a high standard and take joy in the work :)Age

What else ...
I am flexible and have a positive attitude. So if I don’t know how to do something, I am happy to learn and get going with some basic instructions! I have a warm and positive way of relating to other people. I respect people’s boundaries and am always looking for ways to learn and be self-reflective. I take feedback well. I am particularly interested in women's rights and supporting refugees
