Description
Dear people from Workaway,
We are a family of three and we are looking for a way back to our origins. In fact, our life trip began thanks to Workaway itself.
Our journey started not so long ago, but from very distant places and realities.
Mariya studied tourism and is a professional yoga teacher. She left home in 2022, out of a pure inspirational thought, barely one month after the former threat of an invasion concretized into war in her country. Countless adventures followed, both with and without Workaway, accompanying her through Europe and some of the best friends and memories to remember.
Me, Alessandro, is the one who left his birthplace in Italy to find its real self, on the other side of the world in Canada. All thanks to Workaway I abandoned everything, my job and my old life to travel the world. I crossed back the Atlantic to journey through Europe as I desired, rebirthed, to blossom into the best place I could fall in love after pruning my old self off.
Eventually, Belgium was the pot where these two purified lonely seeds landed and rooted.
Among the most enchanting dance of wind, our souls experienced many adventures with Workaway in Europe and, magically, blossomed together into each other. The fruit of this meshing flowered into something as tiny as infinite, our daughter Aura.
We chose Italy as our nest, in terms of the safest and best place where to grow a tiny human. We came back to my hometown in fact and now, after 16 months of seasoning, it’s time to change the air again and move away from these tight valleys to open up our minds and grow into a more civilized environment. In between this transition, we desire to get back to Workaway together as a family for some months. We are looking for projects in northern Europe, also as a mean to escape from the scorching Italian summer. We are willing to share our experience and learn from families alike, while of course enjoying the stunning landscapes of our dreams.
I am a so-called “jack of all trades”. I fix and build things, from industrial machines to houses, and sometimes even people, or their bellies at least.
Mariya fixes people indeed, directly and indirectly through yoga and love. The experience of pregnancy and motherhood brought her into studies about postpartum rehab and natural parenting, to name few.
Aura is that bright and smart creature who follows us everywhere by both our and her feet, without spitting a word yet. Like a colorful bouquet of flowers on a festive coach.
There’s so much to learn, it’s an endless process of discoveries and Mary’s passion is bringing to me the will and desire to get back to my studies in a couple of years, eventually, almost 10 years after my diploma. She’s getting deeper and wider consciousness about parenting and women's health and she desires to learn from other’s experiences and share her knowledge. On the opposite side, I want a bachelor to become a technician, hopefully freelancer, into industrial safety or inspections and lay the stones for my path on my own so to have the most free time possible to spend with my family and for my passions (them being technical too).
About passions I love to invent, fix and create things in general. I collect Lego, play PC games and write sometimes.
Mary loves to read, write her diary, walk in nature and of course to practice yoga.

We are passionately looking forward to live more mesmerizing adventures, together with you, and for the first time along with our daughter. Let’s get in touch!

Mariya fluently speaks Russian and Ukrainian while she's surplisingly proficient in Italian. Our common language is English meanwhile Aura speaks her own.

The time spent here has probably been the best period of the year for me, despite being a particularly chill project (pun intended).
I absoulutely loved the place from the very first moment and I got along marvellously with all the volunteers and Lawrence. The best thing was to be in a big group, with people from all around the world (if half the… read more world was Italy) and long trips with them to the best localities every weekend.
Lawrence is an admirable person and I esteem him alot; he's leading a huge project in which he's investing his life, passion and knowledge to carry it forward. He has a perfectly clear idea in mind of what he wants but there's always space and time for confrontation with the volunteers about how to better do something or not. There's a lot to learn from him and he's always awailable to teach and explain or to solve any doubts. I particularly got along with Lawrence and I think about him as a good friend now; I can't wait to come back in the future to see the progress made on the building and provide my help again.
The former casino is huge and takes a while to get used and oriented into, especially to find the way through a maze of corridors and rooms. Anyway there's a detail nobody got to be used to, the cold. It's well explicit in the bio that no heating is present in site and care must be given to this words, it can be really cold. I never suffered the cold so much in my life although, looking backwards, it forged me stronger. It's an experience for sure to live 24/7 at 0°C, with never a way to escape if not to jump on the car to drive somewhere. It's absolutely not Lawrence's fault at all, the building is in the process of being renovated and is more like a construction site rather than a complete living place, hence some otherwise essential commodities, like heating, are missing.
Everything was provided to us, food was always abundant and shelves often refilled. Volunteers were invited to do chores in shifts and each one used to cook once a day. Here I can say I had the best food in a long time.

I strongly recommend this project to anyone, especially to those with some manual skills and know-how. Just take your time to consider your tolerance to cold when approaching this place in autumn or winter.

Thank you again very very much Lawrence, it's been a pleasure and I hope to see you again soon.

In my life changing experience away from the tight places of my home valley in Italy I had the greatest opportunity to live for two months at Steve's place. It is life changing only if you allow it to be, if you let all the new and unknown things that you may ever happen to face to surprise, fashinate and interest you. That's the way you learn… read more stuff.
There's so many thing that I had the precious chance to try and learn during this Workaway experience. In my career as a general worker to electric maintenance specialist I never happened to face alien activities like home renovation.
I invested the first week of my stay fulfilling the task of tiding up and organising all the tools in the small house basement. I made it, I said when I finished. The second two weeks were spent outside cleaning up some portions of land around the big house. If you can now see the facade from the road is because we made it. If you can now walk over the little stone bridge is because we made it! The rest of the stay has been focused on the renovation of the small house or, better said, completion. We leveled the floors and laid the new vinyl planks. We cut, installed, caulked and painted trims and baseboards. It's been an endless job, really mind and physically demanding, sometimes exhausting, but at the end the difference sure looked astonishing and, most importantly, me and the other French Workawayer could say "we made it". "I made it" is the most satisfying thing you could surprise yourself saying after not only completing a job but also reckoning that you actually learned something new. Something precious that you will carry for the rest of your life, and I'm not just talking about the job.
What's precious about experiences like this is the combination of moments, instants, conversations, the exchange of knowledge and the sharing of personal experiences. Workaway marks your life forever, in the best of the ways, and I really can't be more grateful to Steve and Parissa for the amazing time I spent with them. For all the new skills I acquired, for all the new things I tried and the beautiful human interactions. You can really find some extremely great human beings around here, on Workaway. I have to admit that the results of my stay went way over the expectations. I honestly felt important and appreciated, orders of magnitude more than I ever felt between family or friends.
Workaway not only groups great people but also helps shaping new ones at the same time. 😉
