We are a family of 4 (Alex - 37, Adèle - 31, Isidore - 3 and Dounia - 1) from Switzerland and France. We are teachers: both of us teach French as a foreign language, though Alex is also a German and English teacher, and Adèle works in primary schools.

We have decided to take a gap year to travel through Chile and Argentina. Thus, we are free from September 2023 to June 2024. We want to help in different places and to interact with other families to experience diverse ways of living and raising kids. In our opinion, volunteering is the best way to escape from traditional consumerism and capitalistic logic. It is very important for us to experience such a lifestyle with our little ones.

We have already had many experiences in volunteering (farms, guesthouses, language cafes, DIY jobs, gardening jobs, childcare, teaching, cooking) as we traveled for 15 months from Switzerland to Japan using Workaway most of the time. We have loved those experiences as a couple, and we want to keep traveling this way, but now as parents. Thus, we are bringing with us 4 little extra hands to "help" and prevent anyone that is around from getting bored !

We are both hard-working, easy-going people who like to learn new skills. Of course, as our little budies are just on their way towards independence, one of us will have to take care of them but we can take turns to help in whatever is needed!

Somos una familia de 4 (Alex - 37, Adèle - 31, Isidore - 3 y Dounia - 1) de Suiza y Francia. Somos profesores: ambos enseñamos francés como lengua extranjera y además Alex es profesor de alemán y de inglés y Adèle enseña en escuelas infantiles y primarias.

Decidimos tomar un año sabático para viajar por Chile y Argentina. Así, estamos disponibles desde septiembre del 2023 hasta junio del 2024. Queremos ayudar en diferentes lugares y interactuar con varias familias para experimentar distintas maneras de vivir y de educar a niños. Según nosotros, el voluntariado es la mejor manera de escapar del consumismo y de la lógica capitalista. Es muy importante para nosotros vivir este tipo de vida con nuestros pequeños.

Tenemos ya muchas experiencias como voluntarios (en granjas, hosteles, cafe de idiomas, DIY, jardín, cuidado de niños, enseñanza, cocina) sobre todo de nuestro último viaje en lo cual salimos de Suiza y nos fuimos hasta Japón en 15 meses, haciendo Workaway casi todo el tiempo. Nos encantó viajar de esa manera como pareja, por eso queremos ahora seguir adelante, pero esta vez como padres. ¡Así, ahora contamos con 4 extra manitos para “ayudar” y impedir que nadie alrededor se quede aburrido !

Somos personas dedicadas y nos gusta que las cosas queden bien. Somos muy adaptables y siempre queremos descubrir nuevos conocimientos y competencias. Claro, nuestros niños están solo en su camino hacia la independencia, así que uno de nosotros tendrá que quedarse con ellos, pero podemos alternarnos para ayudar en cualquier ámbito !

Dear team, we apologize for the late review!

We stayed for 2 weeks in the village in May 2019 and had a great time overall. Our main task involved cleaning the rooms but we also did lots of outdoor jobs, such as planting potatoes, beans, weeding, clearing the land, building a small wall around the vegetable garden, and moving some huge heaps of… read more soil to flatten the land. We also sanded and painted the swing. We created a sign, drew it and painted it to put it on the gate. We sometimes had to stay with the guests in the evening while they were enjoying the nice atmosphere in order to switch off all lights and lock everything for the night. Unfortunately, as there are no vineyards on the land yet, we could not be involved in wine-making activities.

We were mainly working with Gela, Mister do-it-all, and Keto, the Queen of the household. Be careful, they are not a couple, despite their funny manners of talking to (or shouting at) each other! They are very authentic and goodhearted people, we really enjoyed being around them 24/7. Keto’s daughter and her two little girls sometimes come to help, which is always a very lively and loud experience. Welcome to Georgia !

Gela is a funny, sensitive and hardworking man, who took care of us and supervised us in the best possible manner. Keto has her own peculiar ways of communicating with other people, but is just as well-meaning and an amazing cook. The endless and surprising hug she gave us when we left says it all about how much she indeed cared about us.

Gela speaks Russian, but Keto only Georgian. The Polish owner, Kuba, is not living in the guesthouse. He was sometimes coming (once a week), and the atmosphere was then different, with very long though quite enjoyable shifts. He has good ideas for how to improve his business but we felt like he was sometimes asking too much out of every team member, which resulted in pretty messy and tense situations.

We had the great luck to be put up in a room of the guesthouse, hence enjoying the same comfort as the guests (maybe the best sleeping conditions we had ever had when volunteering). Yet, it seems like we were the last ones enjoying these conditions, as Kuba decided to put up other volunteers and future ones in an abandoned house opposite the guesthouse. We also felt quite uncomfortable when, on two different occasions, Kuba asked us to be the ones telling the guests to go back to their rooms and stop being noisy, even though he was there himself. We felt like it was his place to do it, but when we discussed the matter, he insisted on us doing it. Not mentioning the video cameras that Kuba is using to check on the staff while he is away…

All in all, we really enjoyed our stay here and deeply think that things could be further improved if all conditions were clear from the beginning (place to stay, days off, hours per day, shifts, proper volunteer vs staff tasks). We thank you for this nice experience and we wish you all the best for the future. Didi madloba !
