  • Description

Hello! My name is AJ, I'm from the northeast USA and have been living nomadically since 2022. The past few winters I have spent in New Hampshire, New York and Colorado working construction, using ice as my primary medium to build large scale ice castles with a crew of about 20 other builders.

I joined Workaway as a way to travel more authentically during the summer months by going off the beaten path, avoiding the tourist spots, meeting locals and experiencing the real culture of the place I'm in. Through my travels and work exchanges I hope to expand my understanding of myself and this world we live in.

Right now I am most interested in growing my construction skills so that one day I can hopefully make a career out of it. I consider myself pretty handy and can figure things out pretty quickly but I definitely need more practice and opportunities to learn more trades and collaborate with other creative minds to bring something beautiful to life.

I am also looking for collaborative experiences in other artistic and musical ways. I have played drums and percussion from a young age and nowadays spend most of my time on guitar. Though I still consider myself a beginner and am looking for guidance to becoming a better player and more well-rounded musician :) Art has always been a major part of my life and a practice that makes me feel more connected with myself and the world around me. I was fortunate enough to have the opportunity to paint a couple of murals for past hosts and am eager to add more to my portfolio!

Other pursuits that are important to me through my travels are deepening my relationship with nature through spending more time growing and preparing food, and building friendships in different places with people whose backgrounds are very different than my own. As of now I am only fluent in English but I have been curious about learning other languages for quite some time.

As a volunteer I believe I have much to offer. I always try to approach everything with an open mind. I am a team player and value clear and open communication. I can work effectively by myself or with others and am always excited to take initiative when I see the opportunity.

I am a big animal lover (cats especially) and enjoy many outdoor activities like hiking, climbing and slacklining. I wouldn't say I'm a thrill seeker but I am always down for a spontaneous adventure. Exploration is a desire woven deep in my soul and it's no surprise I've found a site like Workaway to help me pursue the life of my dreams!

Thank you so much for reading and for considering me as a guest in your home :)
