Our Girls Home is a home for social orphans in Granada, Nicaragua. The girls are not official 'orphans' but victims of physical/mental/sexual abuse, extreme poverty or other social difficulties within their home life. There are currently 26 girls ranging from 4-17 years old. The home is run by an order of nuns called Madre Albertina, committed to caring for the poor. There is a definite structure within the home consisting of 2 live-in carers/educators, a therapist, social worker, and volunteers. They all work together to help the girls with their learning, and their life skills.
Some girls stay for a short while, some have been there for many years. The idea is always to try and reunite them to family members.

Help with Computers/ Internet
We are looking for volunteers who can spend a minimum of 3 months at the home. Volunteers need to have an intermediate level of Spanish and have had experience working with children. The girls are from varied difficult back grounds so they need to be understood and vice versa. We request a police report to show a clean background and only females are considered. As the home is run by an order of nuns we expect volunteers to dress sensibly (no short shorts or revealing tops!) and to not be brandishing tattoos or running around town in the evening, turning up in a bad way at the home!
The key roles are to help with homework, entertain the girls and help them with their daily chores. We are ideally looking for volunteers whom can teach them English in our new computer centre using Rosetta Stone software. This is a great small place to work in and to really get to know the girls. Any other specific skills volunteers would like to bring to the home are welcomed...art, sport, cooking etc but be aware that supplies are difficult to buy in Nicaragua so it is best to buy anything needed for activities before travelling.
We can offer home hosts where the volunteer lives with a family at around $10 a day. This includes all meals and usually includes internet.

In developing countries (Where most hosts are involved in charity work or community development) some of our hosts may ask for a small donation to help the host family or charity (often less then 5 dollars per day) Workaway will allow this listing when the donation goes directly to the family or charity and is just to cover the cost of the volunteer‘s stay. (This will be clearly marked on the host listing).
We will strictly not allow listings posted by agents, “middle men” or projects who we feel are looking to profit from a volunteers stay.
