    Description

Hej! We are an independent boarding school and non-profit organisation located on a charming island with great nature sights in the southern part of Denmark.

Boarding schools in Denmark (called "Efterskole") are different to other countries. Besides the pupils living together and going to classes together, it is much more about the things we share outside the classroom and how they can benefit from that when being taught.

They stay with us for a year where they grow enormously as people. They experience what it means to be away from home for the first time and the responsibility that comes with it. Especially the responsibility we have towards each other.

They come here to live in a community and learn what can be gained from it and what they can give. In this regard, love and compassion are key pieces. Also we aim at nurturing their democratic awareness and open their eyes towards the rest of the world.

We believe that we grow as people in the meeting with what is different from ourselves and what we know. That we can learn more about ourselves when listening to the perspective and stories from others we do not usually meet. We want to pass this on to our students. And we want to pass this on to you.

As a workawayer at our school you will fit right in with our philosophy. You will get the opportunity to share your story with us and our students, and at the same time hopefully grow yourself as a person interacting with them on a daily basis.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

You will be apart of the pupils' everyday life and therefor you will automatically become a part of both the danish culture and the school’s culture. You will learn about the danish ways.

Denmark has a long tradition and is completely unique as a school form. You will experience this and be a part of it as much as everyone else.

As described above, we are looking forward to have foreign cultures be a part of our everyday life because we believe the pupils will learn more about themselves in the meeting with what is different from themselves while at the same time learning more about your culture and history.

    Help

We are very keen on having you become apart of the teaching in coopoperation with our teachers. If you have some qualifications which our students could benefit from within the classroom, we will gladly let you become part of a subject or more. Of specific interest for you could be our English/German/French classes. Besides that we have 5 major classes that might have your interest: art, gastronomy, adventure-/outdoor, pottery and sports. But besides that you can be the organizer of almost everything of your interest and help with all kind of tasks necessary at the school.

You can also help with different practical tasks like gardening and building projects in relation to the teaching.

You also need to be a part of the students daily program to come to know what the formation is at efterskole in Denmark. You will therefore take part in the different daily activities with the students. That could be gathering around the fire, playing soccer, going hiking and much else.

And we want you to share your life experience with the students as we want the school to be a cultural meeting. We hope that you can become a regular part of the daily program both during schooltime and in the evenings or weekends. Here the schedule is open for you for making activities with the students and spending time with them.

If you have some skills to share, you are always welcome to introduce them!

Here we eat quite healthy on a regular basis and have plenty of of vegetarian as well as lactose or gluten-free options every day.

We choose our workaways according to the above and will try to give everyone a polite answer. But we get a lot of applications so excuse us if we miss an answer to you.

You are welcome to make your own food in your building’s kitchen, but you are more than welcome to join our meals.

Students, teachers and workawayers eat together in the cafeteria for breakfast, lunch and dinner. Snack are also available during the day.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

You will have lots of sparetime where you can enjoy our fantastic island Aeroe.

You are also welcome to join the activities that we plan for the students, such as morning walks, evening swims at the shore, pottery, basket weaving, knitting, jewelry-making, gastronomy classes (lately, we’ve focused on fermented foods like Kimchi and ginger beer!)

We have a music room, a podcast studio, a ceramic studio, an art room, a gym and much more!

There is also much exploring to do on our Island. There are great nature sights, lots and lots of coastline and two beautiful old towns to experience. If you have more time on your hands you can take the ferry off the island and go to Svendborg on Fyn, Rudkøbing on Langeland or visit southern Jutland.

The busses on Ærø are free of charge and the ferrys to and from the island are fairly cheap.

Occasionally, we also have a bike you can borrow if you want to explore on two wheels.
