    Description

50 years ago, my grandmother bought 25 acres of land and started her pine tree farm. She built a beautiful and cozy log house with the help of friends and family. It has two bedrooms, one bath, and an upstairs library with her personal collection. The porch is a lovely place to watch the sunrise and look out for deer, and if you want a stay closer to nature, she also built a little insulated treehouse on the property. She also built another house on the property that we call the barn. We travel over to help her whenever we can, but taking care of such a large property requires more hands.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

My grandmother, Onsi, has such an interesting life and has so many stories. She can teach you how to dance like you are from Aruba, introduce you to some great music, and answer any questions about how she built her houses, and how she learned to do so. She has knowledge in electrical wiring, woodwork and agriculture. And she has learned a lot during her travels to US National Parks, UK, Holland, France, Austria, Germany, Belgium, Iceland, Greece, Denmark, Thailand, Peru, Venezuela, Panama, and Costa Rica.

    Help

We would need help to cut down trees, make repairs on the house and barn, and other tasks around the property, like filling bird feeders, planting trees and flowers, and upkeep of a little pond.

    Accommodation

You will be staying at the log house, with two bedrooms and a pullout couch in the upstairs library. It has a full bathroom and kitchen, 2 porches and a deck to lay out some blankets and star gaze.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

The property is just outside a small town, so there is not much in terms of local transportation, but you have a ride to and from the airport, if needed. Onsi likes to get up early and do tasks on the property before the sun gets too intense, and then again later in the afternoon. There is a town close by with a couple cafes, an ice cream shop, and many little stores with antiques or handmade trinkets and clothing. We are also a 20 minute drive from a larger college town with nightlife, a theatre, a museum and butterfly garden. Something we love to do for guests is set up a bonfire at night, with all the branches and trees that have been cut during your stay.
