  • Description

(next to our great team of 3 lovely and great volunteers) WE ARE SEARCHING FOR 1 MORE NICE VOLUNTEER
    -> FROM 4th of JANUARY
Since it's high season we are in need for a couple of extra hands....;-)

Our Butterfly park build up from scratch needs your enthusiasm “Hosts / Guiding”… active!
Outdoor active Persons, very social, preference 25yr or older, MINIMUM STAY 3 weeks, preferably more (needs to have very good English communication skills!)
Located: 27 km. from the city Luang Prabang, 300 meters from the most famous nature attraction in Laos.

Our Butterfly Park can be very suitable for persons who are active/initiative taking persons and really love nature like us. Our park and its surroundings are a true paradise! Uphill, attached to the small Khmu tribe village, beautiful (turquoise) water flowing down next to the premises.
A grounded person and true nature lover, who really wants to be and connect with nature is incredibly welcome to help here!

You can really make a difference with your help, on the long term! Help with visitor service related jobs, so we - the founders- can do all the necessary back ground work, to keep us going into the direction of nature education.
No visitors, means no money and we really want to bring Lao school children/teachers here and make them in a playful way aware about their great and vulnerable nature.

So, please if you would like to do reception (welcoming people!), guiding visitors in the butterfly section, handing out flyers (1 hour a day) at the entrance of Kuang Si Falls (this is a 7 minute WALK from our park), WE WOULD BE SO HAPPY!!
Be aware that you might conquer time (only in low season) to be patient when you are waiting for visitors! AND, loads to see, hear, feel and smell in nature! AND, bring your (e-)book, write about your experiences and suddenly… there are visitors again ;-) In high season, there is a lot of social interaction going on, a big part of the day. Realize you need to be a 'social animal' to like this.

Our butterfly park is opened since January 2014 for visitors and has welcomed many volunteers and we know one thing for sure: It takes special kind of people to gear up with us. So let’s be totally clear with one another!!! We are kind, loving, people, social, welcoming, clean (Dutch style) and very direct in communication (Dutch style)… and most of all; totally dedicated to what we do.

Our butterfly park has a variety of flower gardens AND a 900m2 netted butterfly garden and lots of waterfalls. In total it's about 1 hectare. We are proud to study and put the small money we earn into studying Laos forest and butterflies. We love to explain the magical life of butterflies to visitors and hopefully soon to numbers of Lao students in all age groups…. We are getting better and better… more organized… and STEP BY STEP MORE appreciated by many people in Luang Prabang. Foreign biologists, botanist and entomologists are offering help because we are the first butterfly park in Laos with a clear mission… to share the enthusiasm and necessity of keeping nature .
Our mission is to create a nature study center about Laos nature with and for LAO children and teachers; to show the relation from insects (butterflies) to plants/trees and food for all kind of creatures on earth.

We need for the coming period: Volunteers who are 25 years or older and most of all OUTDOOR PERSON'S AND NATURE LOVER'S FROM THE FIRST GRADE (stay FROM 3-4 weeks). Having very good English verbal skills!

An emotional stable, grounded, open minded personality and in a good state of health (mentally as physically).

WE ONLY ACCEPT BEAUTIFULLY CLEAN AND VERY WELL TRIMMED BEARDS! Or better: no beards (unless yours is very pretty!) LAO Customs are: Lao people super dislike man/guys with a long, untrimmed beard. They think it's very unclean! They are very clean on themselves and expect this from another person as well!!

    - We give you a great time if you are honest and really want to connect to this place and are deeply in love with nature.
(Please, don't be calculative about the hours being on the premises) we expect you are active/ taking initiative and understand why we are enthusiastic about our project
    - If you are afraid of spiders, geckos, or other things which are here in nature, please, apply for another volunteering job. THIS IS NATURE IN ALL IT'S PURITY!
    - We will smile in an understanding way if you complain about a hard mattress, slow internet or the size of your balcony….….. we expect you understand you are in LAOS! ;-)
    - We do love holiday’s as well, but relaxing at our place is mainly for visitors.

You will pay for your own stay at a reasonable priced local guesthouse (WHICH IS OWNED & RUNNED BY LOCAL LAO PEOPLE) with basic wooden bungalows ($6 (50.000 LAK) per day) (200 meters down the road from the Butterfly Park) or you can choose for a more upper class local guesthouse as well, with ‘upper’ pricing ($30).

It’s not a cheap solution to request for volunteers. Our staff is wonderful and skilled. Since we only prefer local Lao people from this or surrounding villages, most of them don't speak (any) English, but 'only' LAO, KHMU (tribe language) and THAI (which they have learned from Thai broadcasting).

Due legislation we are not allowed to have anybody else then ourselves sleeping at the premises of the Butterfly Park.
Otherwise volunteers could have stayed for free, but that's not reality. Since we don't get any external funding, we are only capable to pay your lovely food, see below:

We will be happy to cover your food costs, for three nice meals a day: we will give you full western meals and 2 beverages OR drinks (because we like nice, good and healthy food).
-> And most of all: we will be the ones shopping frequently 30 km away (50 minutes drive) and put your nice sandwiches etc. on the back of our old motorcycles, as well,...... when it rains.

We do not have any external funding… we have to earn money every day. We believe this is the way to go strong, efficient and focused. We have invested all our money and build a year with local craftsmen to get our butterfly park up and open for visitors.

Our butterfly park is nr. 4 or 5 on Tripadvisor website because of the beauty and the energy we daily give to our visitors, our 7 Lao staff members and volunteers. In this order we operate…… after a few days of training we will love you like our staff, or even as friends but this is up to you… depending on your attitude and interest for nature.

We are searching for volunteers who wants to do jobs like:

    - (hobby) Entomologists, horticulturists and botanists (stay a minimum of 3-6 months between June and November).
We strongly prefer a person who is really 'hands on,' (quite) handy and a combination of these 3 occupations. You will work together with our local gardener(s).

    As well ass:

    - Receptionist (we will train you for this)

    - Guiding visitors in the butterfly house (we will train you for this)

    - Handing out leaflet's at the entrance of Kuang Si Falls, to inform visitors about the existence of the Butterfly Park, 300 meters down the road, with the goal: nature awareness!

Kuang Si Falls area after 5.00 Pm (when the crowds are gone) is still beautiful, but an average rural Lao village with NOTHING TO DO/HANG OUT. Nothing here for you but the sounds of the falls and jungle. If you like to listen music (from your phone, laptop, etc), read books, write, play guitar, listen to all the sounds of nature, YOU WILL BE COMPLETELY IN YOUR ELEMENT.

    -> NO ATM

After 8.00/8.30 PM you’ll be out there at your basic bungalow hopefully having chats with other volunteers…… consider this….

Are you a strong person who also loves to spend time alone… than you respond… if not, as attractive our story sounds, please respond to someone else who also needs your kindly help.

We will give you an idea of the situation when you come here, the day routine and how free days work a bit for volunteers:

In Laos we have 5 months of high season (Nov-March), then we need to earn it for the rest of the year, to be able to keep our Lao staff whole year round, maintenance and development towards nature education.

We ask a tiny bit more then 25 hours a week.*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️

9.00/9.15 breakfast (our lovely Lao staff will prepare this for you)

    9.45 reception set up (START)
    10.00 park open
11.00 (usually) the first visitors will start to come
    16.30 park closes (STOP)

    Shift A: 9.45-15.00 o'clock with 30 minutes lunch break
    Shift B: 11.00-16.30 o'clock with 30 minutes lunch break

    17.30/18.00 start cooking
(We will make a schedule together when you will cook (2 times a week) and when somebody else will cook for you ;-)
    18.30/19.00 start dinner

-> Every other day you can start at 11.00 am OR leave at 15.00 o'clock and enjoy your time in a different way. The environment is very beautiful to explore.

->Of course you will rotate between reception, guiding and handing out leaflets*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ (*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️1 hour a day MAXIMUM.)

-> You will have half an hour lunch break (or when its quiet (only in low season) with visitors it can be 45 minutes+).

*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ You will be 2 nights/1 full day off per week. Which practically means: leaving at 16.00 o'clock*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ to Luang Prabang (there is only 'day transportation' since Kuang Si Falls area is a day attraction), stay 2 nights in Luang Prabang and after two nights you will be back around 10.00/10.30 am at the Butterfly Park.
*️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️️ Make sure have packed your 'stuff to take to Luang Prabang', before arriving at the Butterfly Park.

If you wish to stay on your free day in the environment to hike around, you will arrange your food yourself that day.

We simply do love it – “the Lao life”… … we are the butterfly-people, as Lao people joke, when we visit the city of Luang Prabang… actually we live surrounded by the blue waters of a famous waterfall, 27 km away from town, but it’s magical and beautiful to life this in this way.

Regards and looking forward to meet you! Write to us… your age, your picture, your motivation… your absolute skills…

With warm and colorful butterfly greetings,
    Olaf and Ineke
