We are a self sustained microfinance organization of Lao Women´s Union providing financial education and services to rural women entrepreneurs. Our head office is based in Vientiane and the current 15 service units spread across 4 provinces and serve more than 200 villages mostly in rural districts.
We want to support our key staff in the head office by offering English courses to them during working hours to make the organization ready to profit from knowledge exchange in the region.
Currently only 5 people have the minimum language skill level for them to participate in some of the exchanges with partner projects in Myanmar and Vietnam among others. We want to open the existing opportunities to other, also more junior staff members as well, to broaden their horizons, supporting them in developing their skills further.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
Lao people are very welcoming and this assignment would leave plenty of time to join the staff in visiting the rural areas, interact with the local people while on work related travel.
We look for candidates with mother tongue English and experience in teaching ESL. We tried with short term volunteers but it did not work for many reasons the two main reasons being: lack of education/teaching experience and English skills level. The minimum is 8 weeks and longer stays are desirable to achieve that the students adjust to accents and different teaching methods.
The organization will be able to provide an apartment close to the office where training will be conducted. The organization will cover the rent for the volunteer. Our staff is usually cooking for lunch and putting some money together to buy for common lunch. The volunteer is welcome to join. We also offer a small daily allowance to cover for other daily expenses and a motorbike (if you are comfortable with it) or a bicycle.
The organization is supported by a long term expert who helps in the organizational development, technical training and strategy development. We happened to have one French volunteer from AfID (Accountants for International Development) with us who very much enjoyed her assignment, the curiousness of Lao people, the impact she had on the people she worked with and trained. Her experiences were so strong that she makes plans changing her career path! We also had two Swedish MBA students who did research on our organization and the impact we have on the customers and their economic situation. Since September 2019 our language training program was supported by 4 teachers already. The current teachers being Rebecca and Stephen who stayed with us during the COVID-19 lock down, also experimenting with distance learning.
There is plenty to see in Lao and all visitors so far have enjoyed the country and its people.
