    Description

    Hello Work Away volunteers.
I live in the Lanark Highlands with my friend Phil. We have been slowly working way at our eco project which is the building of an octagonal, cordwood house. We have decided that this year we will put a push on the project and get it finished. We need help with lots of different things, some require knowledge of building with timber, most do not.
TIMBER FRAMER: The foundation is laid and we need 1 or 2 folks to design and build the bents for the front of the house which will be a south facing wall of mainly windows and stacked glass bottles. For this we need someone with knowledge of TIMBER FRAMING including correct forms of NOTCHING.
GENERAL LABOUR: We require helpers to peel bark from cedar logs, split logs, transport logs out of the bush to the building site, mix mortar, stack logs for walls and glass bottles for the face of the house.
ART PROJECT: The stacking of glass bottles will be a creative project for someone to design.
INTERIOR: we need electric wiring from solar panels, water conduits for gravity fed faucets and drains hooked up to the sink.
COOK: Phil's vision is to have about 8 or so helpers at a time and so we will need a cook who can create 2 nutritious meals a day from scratch (not from bottles, cans and packaged foods) and is able to accommodate allergies and dietary restrictions for various reasons.
You may be asked to help with a couple of other small eco projects at the cabin in the back 40.
We now have a working outdoor kitchen thanks to our generous neighbours. Hurrah!
There may be small amounts of gardening to tend to if you are into that.
We have lots of space for tents and parking. The property is a little out of the way but folks up here are used to hitch hikers and getting a ride out will be no problem for those traveling that way.
Life is very simple and rustic ie we have no running water, no internet service and no electricity. The toilet is an outhouse. In cooler weather we heat water on the stove for sponge bathing. In the summer we drive down to the river to bathe. We now have an outdoor shower as well. Hurrah!
There are no fire pits at the individual campsites but there are two central, communal fire places for evenings if you like.
We also have one single bed in the trailer but you need to book ahead to be sure of sleeping inside.
So, if you are ready to rough it a little we have lots to do. It won't be all work. Phil is an accomplished guitar player and would love to jam, from time to time with those interested in that.
There will also be trips to neighbouring towns for festivals, swimming holes, fishing and generally just having a day in town.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

Folks will learn about corwood construction and many aspects of this eco-project.
We are totally off grid and do our best to live greenly, so you will benefit from our knowledge and experience in that.
You can pick up some great tips about foraging for food both in the gardens and in the bush.
We live by basic perma-culture principals. Our good friends Bonita and Bastou are teachers of perma-culture and you may be able to set up some time with them as well.
If you are musicians there could be some good music happening as Phi is an accomplished guitar player.
There will be loads of opportunities to practice English and I would love to learn a bit of any language you speak
There will be opportunities to take in festivals in neighbouring towns.

    Accommodation

Accommodation is basic camping. If you have your own camping gear that would be best, but for those who don't we have some spare tents and blankets, just let us know ahead so we can tell you if the supplies are available or currenlty in use. We have lots of space for tents and parking. The property is a little out of the way but folks up here are used to hitch hikers and getting a ride out will be no problem for those traveling that way.

You may have evening fires at either of the communal fire places if you like.
We have one single bed in the trailer but you need to book ahead if you want to stay indoors rather than camping.
So, if you are ready to rough it a little we have lots to do.
You will be provided with 3 simple, nutritious meals a day. I have lots of experience in cooking for those with food allergies, sensitivities and dietary restrictions for various reasons. Just provide me with your list of restrictions.
