We are a newly built, beautiful, private, gated, small beach front community with 37 lots. My name is Mary and I will be your contact. We are located a short 30 minute drive west of Jipijapa if you are looking at the map that Workaway provides.
Currently there are 12 full-time and 4 part-time residents. All current home owners are originally from N. America. We have a large pool that is in need of repair, a club house/palapa and tennis court. We are located 3 kilometers north of a small fishing village called Puerto Cayo. We are located 20 meters from the beach.
We are nestled in a small, rural fishing village and cultural exchange opportunities are available all around. You can practice your Spanish while working alongside our part-time gardener. If you volunteer to help incoming fishing boats haul in their catch, you will be rewarded with a few fish to take home. A walk into town gives you plenty of options for interacting with the locals, from eating in the beach restaurants, to watching a soccer match in the village square. Puerto Cayo will welcome you to immerse yourself in the local culture as much as you desire!
Basically we are in need of a "couple" who are willing to perform light maintenance, 3-5 hours per person per day, for 5 days a week. Depending on what projects we have and what skills you have, the work can vary. Our normal arrangements ask for 3 hours per day in exchange for lodging only. If more work is required, we will ask for 5 hours a day in exchange for lodging and a food allowance. We prefer longer term residency with a minimum of one month stay to longer.
Everything from beach trash pickup, oiling hinges, painting, light gardening, brush clearing and burning, policing the front wall for trash, sanding and re-varnishing wooden items, handyman work, etc. All are simple tasks that can be taught and learned in minutes. There are also possibly more "advanced" maintence projects available for those who come with the right skills - specifically ability to fix electrical & plumbing issues is a big bonus.
This is a more "independent atmosphere" than many Workaway projects. You have your own private living quarters and will volunteer with minimal supervision. We really like people who are self-directive - who, if they see something that needs to be done and they can do it, will work to leave the place better than when they arrived. The casita gets a lot of use, so maintenance projects around there are expected as well.
Some of the maintenance and improvement projects Workaways have helped us with in the past are:
- Cleaning and painting the casita
- Making wooden furniture and shelving for the casita
- Replacing our rusted front man gate with a working wooden one
- Clearing and burning weeds in vacant lots
- Building a BBQ grill for our palapa area
- Sanding and repainting light poles
- Laying irrigation tubing for watering our plants
- Sanding and revarnishing wood in our pool and palapa area
You will have a stand alone, non-smoking workers quarters that will include plenty of privacy. There is a living room/small office, bedroom with queen-sized bed, bathroom/shower, and kitchen/dining area. Internet & drinking water will be provided as well. Although our casita is a non-smoking area, there are areas where you can smoke outside.
Washing Machine, Stove, Oven, Fridge, along with a fully equipped kitchen will be available. All linens, cooking utensils, basic furniture needs will be provided.
We do not allow you to bring animals/pets. But we have a very sweet and sociable “community cat” that adopted us. She initially lived in the common palapa/garden area, but despite our best efforts to the contrary, has decided the casita is her home and the Workaways are her people. :) She has become quite the lovable little companion to our volunteers, who have enjoyed her personality, company and antics. But if you don’t like cats, you may not want to consider staying with us, because at this point, it’s her home you’ll be staying in. 😂
If you like seafood, look no further than Puerto Cayo. It is a small fishing village offering everything from fish to shrimp, as well as fresh vegetables right off the farmers truck.
A coastal bus (to Manta, Lopez, or even into Cayo) drives right by us and I have the schedule. It is .50 cent to ride it into town. A $2 dollar taxi will also take you anywhere into town if you wish and many times a ride will be provided upon request in advance.
Buses run in front of our place all day long to Manta and south to larger cities, so traveling via bus anywhere is very accommodating.
Hiking, rain forest monkey trails and mineral/mud bath are all within a 30 minute ride. Swimming, tennis & beach walking are located on sight. If surfing is your thing, then you will love Puerto Cayo.
Shopping in major stores are only one hour away to Manta and light shopping only 30 minutes away to Jipijapa or Puerto Lopez. Basic shopping in Puerto Cayo is only 3 kilometers away.
There are many nearby towns and fun activities within about an hour's drive or bus ride from Puerto Cayo. Fun nearby towns and day trip sites to see include: Puerto Lopez, Montecristi, Pacoche Rain Forest, Los Frailes beach, Isla de la Plata ("Poor Man's Galapagos Island") and Agua Blanca. Montanita and Salinas are close and fun overnight trips as well.
All our volunteers tell us that their time here flew by, and they wish they could have stayed longer. There is much to explore in our little corner of the world - we hope you will come help us out and enjoy it as well!
