We live outside of St. John's and during your cultural experience can watch the sunset and walk down to the Bay as well as swim in nearby ponds. We have a small organic garden, a great cat, and sometimes a visiting beagle. We have three children. One lives at home. One speaks german and the other needs extra attention, patience, guidance and understanding because of impulsivity because of a brain injury.
We have a house that is being renovated in a small community south of St. John's too, so wood working and framing experience can help as well as kitchen design and gardening for food. This opportunity allows for cultural exchange.
(We especially are looking for ways to engage our son (24) who has a brain injury. To increase his neuroplasticity he needs physical, manual-mental and mental stimulation. You should connect with us to really know if this is the work for for you. Hike the East Coast Trail, bike, swim in ponds, snorkel in the ocean and share in other outdoor activities. As well as art, drums, guitar and playing chess and go.) Our son is having more difficulties than can be imagined at the moment and we are seeking 24 hour care for him.
In the winter we cross country ski, skate, snow shoe and hike and go to the gym. This has been a strange winter weather year, be prepared to be innovative in your activities.
We run a non profit whale rescue service for fishers. and we need help with understanding websites, internet, computers and that kind of indoor stuff. Ability to work on the water can be an asset, ability to get along with people under stressful situations an asset.

We share our joy of living in Newfoundland and invite you to be active in our lovely province. Workaways learn about the cultural life on an island that is lightly populated, but has a big city with many events. There is great Newfoundland music, art, and of course the beautiful ocean and hiking areas. We speak mostly English and are willing to learn some of your language and culture. For us we will teach you Newfoundland cooking (cod, moosegetti, and veggies and chicken from our small natural garden). We are excited that you are interested and we are interested to have you share your culture and life with us.
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.
We are seeking 24 hour care for our son at the moment, so there is little opportunity to engage with him
:(.......Experience working with a brain injured person and having lots of patience is an asset. This takes a special person to realize the ups and downs of such an experience. Sharing time outdoors and active and indoors and school books...Ability to teach, play guitar or drums or ukelele...playing any musical instrument is an asset. Listening to music an asset too...Someone who enjoys the outdoors, hiking, biking and sharing time.
Being a companion, treating a person as a true person , ability with open dialogue for all....do not be someone that knows everything.

Bedroom in a house, share bathroom with two others. There is room for a tent in the backyard during summer weather. We are a fifteen minute drive outside the city and there is no bus transport, but there are rides to town.
We all share cooking and cleaning and wood gathering activities.
Hike the east coast trail, cod fishing, swimming, going to the gym, cross country skiing, snow shoeing, bike available. (We expect person to share in caring activities for brain injured young man,) working alongside us rebuilding an old house (construction, painting, cleaning), gardening, teaching. Newfoundland is a gem for most waiting to be explored. Plan on staying in the province more time that you thought.
