Description
We have a house which is 60 minutes from St. John's in Cavert on the Southern Shore and adjacent to the wonderful East Coast Trail in Newfoundland. During your cultural experience in Calvert you can watch the sunset and walk the East Coast Trail as well as swim in nearby ponds and take part in community activities. We also have a have a small organic garden in St. Philips but this year we will be most active out of Calvert. We have a labrador retreiver, Nova, who is very friendly.
You can help with house work, cooking, planning activities and sharing time with family in the evening and during the day. There may be house building, painting, computer work, cleaning, cleaning whale bones, kitchen, cooking, splitting wood, cod fishing and gardening for food. This opportunity allows for cultural and language exchange.
Hike the great Newfoundland East Coast Trail, bike, swim in nearby ponds, snorkel in the ocean in Caplin Bay and share in other outdoor activities.
Mostly this year we need help in Calvert with our family members activities. We do run a non profit whale rescue service for fishers. and we need help with understanding websites, internet, computers and that kind of indoor stuff. Ability to work on the water can be an asset, ability to get along with people under stressful situations an asset.

Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
We share our joy of living in Newfoundland and invite you to be active in our lovely province. Workaways learn about the cultural life on an island that is lightly populated, but has a big city with many events. There is great Newfoundland music, art, and of course the beautiful ocean and hiking areas. We speak mostly English and are willing to learn some of your language and culture. For us we will teach you Newfoundland cooking (cod, moosegetti, and veggies and chicken from our small natural garden). We are excited that you are interested and we are interested to have you share your culture and life with us.

Projects involving children
This project could involve children. For more information see our guidelines and tips here.

Help
painting inside, outside house building, childcare, adult companionship, green house organizing, gardening, computer upgrades, house work, cooking, cleaning whale bones, taking care of chickens and turkeys. Cod fishing.
Being a companion, treating a person as a true person , ability to open dialogue for all or interested to learn...do not be someone that knows everything.
Languages
Languages spoken
English: Fluent
Spanish: Intermediate
Japanese: BeginnerThis host offers a language exchange
We are very interested to learn more Japanese and Spanish, but learning basics of all languages interests us too.
Accommodation
We have a bedroom with two single beds or one with a double bed . There is room for a camper or tents. We all share cooking and cleaning and gardening and other household activities.

What else ...
This workaway activity needs somene interested in immersing themselves in family activities. We are over an hour from St. John's, and we can help with travel arrangements. Hike the East Coast Trail, cross country ski, working alongside us rebuilding an old and a new house (construction, painting, cleaning), gardening, teaching. Playing games, swimming in ponds and the ocean.
Newfoundland is a gem for most waiting to be explored. Plan on staying in the province more time that you thought.
