WHAT WE SPECIFICALLY NEED is:
• NATIVE SPEAKER OF ENGLISH (C2)
• NATIVE SPEAKER OF FRENCH (C2)
• NATIVE SPEAKER OF GERMAN (C2)
We need a specific profile for the three posts: that of an assistant teacher, with background studies/training who is willing to integrate in the school life at least for 2 months.
Note: please, do NOT apply if you do not fit into the above characteristics
We are a government run school and not a profit making business, an official language school offering English, French and German as our main languages but also a number of special courses that range from Japanese to ESP language courses, such as Business English. We are located in Cornellà de Llobregat, a quiet 90,000-inhabitant town bordering on Barcelona. There are very good public transport connections to the center of Barcelona through high-frequency underground, train, tram and bus services.
Our school’s ethos is based on multilingualism, and our school project aims to promote linguistic awareness of other languages. We firmly believe that our job as teachers consists not only in teaching a single language, but also awakening pleasure in discovering other cultures and languages. We know of no better way to meet this aim than by hosting international volunteers at our school.
MOTIVATION TO HOST VOLUNTEERS
As it is a very young school, the faculty is starting various projects to make it a modern, innovative language school. We would like to host volunteers to share this privileged situation with them and to involve them in the school project; not only by giving them teaching assignments, but also by making them design activities, workshops, projects for the school and also for the students and teachers. We operate as a team and we share our teaching practice by working collaboratively and by co- and team-teaching.
HOW VOLUNTEERS CAN BENEFIT FROM COMING TO HELP US
All our school staff are more than willing to open their classrooms and share their expertise with both pre- and in-service teachers to offer them opportunities for professional self-development. Moreover, our students will benefit from first-hand insights into the assistant’s culture and language or languages and will be able to put into practice their foreign language competences to communicate with them.
We also think we can offer volunteers an innovative learning environment as far as the teaching of foreign languages to adult learners is concerned, and at the same time the opportunity to learn the languages we offer at our school and the official languages of our region.
INFORMATION ABOUT THE SCHOOL
The school is developing an IT project promoting the use of new technologies for social interaction and real communication with the world (videoconferencing and the use of web 2.0 tools as communication mediators). Our classrooms are provided not only with innovative equipment, digital boards and computers, but also with Wi-Fi technology to enable students to work with their own devices (mobile phones, laptops, tablets, etc.) in and outside the classroom. We design our lessons with state-of-the-art and creative methodologies such as task-based programming, projects and real communication.
Our student body is diverse. It is composed of students aged 16 to 65+ (adult learning), some of which have never had the chance to learn a foreign language and therefore need special support when facing this challenge. Many others are university undergraduates and/or workers that have already learned the language to a certain extent.
WHAT MEANS DO WE HAVE TO ACCEPT VOLUNTEERS?
We have a really active student association. They are keen people, helping out the school project on a volunteer basis. They are part of the school decision board where they channel their proposals and are listened to.
It is precisely the student association who is both interested and able to take in volunteers, thus providing the school with keen help and the workawayers with sound co-teaching experience and closeness to students and Catalan culture.
WHAT THE ASSOCIATION OFFERS IN EXCHANGE
The association can cover the workawayer's travelling expenses to and from school, school insurance, a possibility for being put up by one or several school students (in the area near the school) and if the budget allows it, a short Catalan or Spanish language course.
WHAT YOU CAN DO IN YOUR FREE TIME
Living in Barcelona will give you a wide range of options to fill your free time with enjoyable activities.
We are on the seaside but also less than a two-hour drive from the Pyrenees, so you can benefit from almost uncountable ways to spend your spare time in the open air and in the countryside. And Barcelona is a city packed with cultural events and exciting monuments for those who prefer city life and sightseeing.
Furthermore, working in a language school is an excellent opportunity for meeting new people and becoming part of the local community. As we not only teach languages, but also organize lots of social and cultural events, we will provide our workawayers with many possibilities to get to know our students, collaborators and the people involved in the school life. A vibe for sure!
Help with Computers / internet
Both at school and at home they will surely be able to develop their Spanish and Catalan. Getting to know students in the school is fairly easy (there are loads of them!). Also the traveller will get enormous teaching experience as our school is always on the go with activities and new ideas.
