Due to lack of government funding, virtually no affordable nursery schools exist for the families in the slums. We, Msekwa and Flora, took it upon ourselves to make a difference in our neighborhood. With help from our families, we opened and run a free weekday nursery school in response to this need.
We, Msekwa and Flora, are 22 year old girls. Msekwa is orphan of all two parents and we are both from the slums. We know how hard life can be when you have no guarantee of tomorrow. The aim of our nursery school is to help the toddlers in our neighborhood to get some basic education and to make the lifes of the families a little bit easier.
Reproductive health is also a big issue in the slums all over Africa. Currently six of every ten female in the slums of Dar will get pregnant before the age of 18. In addition to running the nursery school we aim to address this issue through talking and discussing about reproductive health. Through empowering young women through discussions about birth control, sexually transmitted diseases and more, we are hoping to make a positive change in their lives.
We are always looking to better ourselves so please let us know if you have any ideas!

We will do our best to make you feel at home and connect you with the Tanzanian/African culture. You will get to know African local life and you will see how people are living in the slum. We will show you how to do different things like how to make Swahili/African food.
But the most important thing you will be getting is the genuine affection and smiles from the toddlers when you are doing different activities with them or just being close to them and giving your care and attention for them.
According to your skills and interests you can help with teaching different subjects like English to the children and engage with them through different kind of art projects like drawing, painting, dancing and singing. You can also help with cooking and other household things.
Help with fundraising for children meals and other materials would also be greatly appreciated since many families in the slums cant afford a single dollar meal in a day for their children while they are attending the nursery school.

There is family homestay provided for you. Male volunteers will stay in Msekwa's family house which is where the nursery school is located. Female volunteers will be sharing the room where we, Flora and Msekwa, live in a different neighborhood close to the nursery school.
You will be provided a simple local meal three times a day (breakfast, lunch and dinner). For these meals a small compensation of 5000 TZS (~2 EUR / ~2,2 USD) per day would be appreciated because resources we have are limited.
We will provide you with information about local restaurants if you want to have your meals there. We can also show you to nice restaurants or western places whenever you are feeling like having coffee or a bit more familiar food.
On weekends you can for example spend your time exploring the different markets and beaches around the city or just be part of the everyday life with us. It's also possible to take some more days off and have a relaxing break in Zanzibar.
