    Description

Hi everyone! The High School in Jalgaon, India is a privately owned and operated school with classes until tenth grade. It is a small school of fewer than 600 students altogether, many of which do not speak English. The school was founded by my grandparents with the mission of making English education accessible and affordable to the people of this small town.

In the past few years, my mom and I have made many improvements and changes to the school - one of which is bringing in an increased amount of English-speaking teachers from around the world for the kids to interact with. This is where you come in.

The ideal candidate would have experience with children, teaching English as a second language, and have a TEFL certification (not required). The most important thing is a kind spirit, adaptable personality, and a willingness to teach and learn from these bright young minds.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

The work at the school is deeply satisfying. The kids are adorable and treat foreigners like celebrities. Their exposure to other countries is limited, so they can benefit a lot from even simple conversations with foreigners.

Jalgaon is located in the state of Maharashtra, about a 5-hour train ride from Bombay. It is located 50 km away from a UNESCO world heritage site, Ajanta caves, accessible by car or bus. Maharashtra has a rich cultural heritage and a diverse population. You will find some of the best food and the kindest people. We are positive you will love it here and not want to leave!

  • Help

    Help

The main responsibility of workawayers is to be a teacher's aide wherever help is needed. As you get more comfortable, you can lead classes and activities. The kids need help mostly with reading comprehension, writing, and public speaking practice. The students range from nursery age to tenth standard (15 or 16 years old), and different activities will be needed for each age group.

That being said, there is a lot of room in the school for creative projects if you wish to implement them. Working with the kids on an art piece, garden, or forming a club would be fantastic, as well as teaching them the basics of technology and the internet. If you speak any foreign languages, the kids can also learn these from you.

The school day is 12pm - 5pm Monday - Friday, and 12pm - 4pm on Saturdays. I am sure the kids will steal your heart, and you will want to be in school the whole time. However, we only require a time commitment of 20 hours/week, or less if there are multiple Workawayers at the same time. We are very flexible on this as well.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

Jalgaon is a small town, with a lake, some cafes and restaurants, two movie theatres, and a mall. It is well connected to other Indian cities by rail or bus, and many trips are possible this way.

The closest day trips would be to the museum and gardens of Gandhi Teerth, the Buddhist caves in Ajantha, or the nearby cities of Aurangabad, Indore, or Nagpur.

For longer trips, you could take some time to visit old forts in Maharashtra, visit Bombay or New Delhi, see the Taj Mahal in Agra, or the beaches in Goa.
