    Portland Information

Portland in Victoria is a medium sized town with a population of about 10,000 people. The township was named after the Duke of Portland in England. Before European settlement the Gunditjmara aboriginal people inhabited the area living in stone huts.

In 1834 Edward Henty arrived in Portland from Tasmania and established settlement. As it wasn’t until 1835 that people settled in Melbourne, that makes Portland Victoria’s birthplace as it was the very first town to be established.

One of the best activities to do in Portland is to experience the Great South West Walk, which is a 250 kilometre walking track which will take you through forests, gorges and cliff tops. The Eco walk features plenty of wildlife and fauna with some very spectacular scenery.

The Portland Maritime Museum is another great attraction to visit. The museum features one of the oldest lifeboats in the world, a real whale skeleton and memorabilia on some of the many shipwrecks that occurred off the Portland coastline.

Another great museum to discover is the Portland Powerhouse Museum. The museum holds and extensive display of vintage cars and motorbikes from the 1900’s to the 1960’s. There is also other automotive memorabilia such as old petrol pumps, antique signs and toys.

The Portland Cable Tram is a great way to discover the township of Portland. The tram ride is very scenic and stops at some of the best tourist places to see in Portland. Along the ride you will also pass through the botanical gardens and some magical coastal strips.

While in (email hidden) to see is the Cape Nelson Lighthouse, which is located not too far away. The lighthouse was built in 1884 and features a telescope, which was installed in 1885 and at the time was the biggest telescope of its kind in Australia.
