    Description

Our purpose: to build an eco retreat with the intentions of helping our community and others.
We are a for profit with a non profit focus.

    *UPDATES*
We are now taking skilled, artistic, passionate volunteers and hard working individuals that aren't afraid to get their hands dirty and learn new skills. Contribute your ideas to build something truly unique.
We want to build a team of competent workawayers that can run projects together or as leads with local laborers.

    Who are we looking for:
You! We have a strong need for skilled helpers in architecture, construction, carpentry, pool and pond design, etc.
We put a high emphasis on good honest people that are easy to get along with. We don't have abrasive personalities and we expect the same from you. We won't tolerate fighting or inconsiderate behavior.
We do expect everyone to do their fair share of tasks and nothing more than that.
We love self motivators and people with creative spark.

    What are we offering:
We are offering an experience to be part of something amazing, to experience a new culture and make new life long friends. We are offering fun, excitement, adventure, relaxation and the ability to learn and grow with us.
The environment we wish to have for our work-awayers is fun, exciting, etc. As business owners, managers and developers that have worked our way from the bottom, we understand that the MOST important part of a good working environment is to have happy workers. We wish to build a working environment that people want to come to, one that doesn't feel like work at all because honestly, it shouldn't! This isn't a job we are recruiting for, this is the way life should be. Looking forward to meeting you all.

    A few extra notes:
We will provide meals with ingredients to make breakfast, lunch and dinner but we all enjoy cooking, eating and feeding friends, plus we have a house keeper who enjoys cooking for everyone and making massive pots of something new every day for lunch. We don't guarantee it but it's likely going to be an option at least 80% of the time. We'd also never put anyone in a position of struggle, if your budget is very limited, please let us know and we'll make sure you're taken care of. The Finca itself is loaded with fruit trees and you are welcome to anything that grows there. Sometimes things at the Finca can be slow, it's not always a steady pace of work with projects, due to material procurement or typical developing country set backs so be ok with relaxing every now and then and just enjoying the moment.
Another note: We are not against marijuana or psychedelic use so long as it's in moderation. We don't tolerate hard drugs, alcoholics, people who can't control themselves, glue sniffers or degenerates. This is Colombia and individual drug use is completely legal and a constitutional right, just be responsible.

About us as people and not just the facts:
Shane - I am from the U.S and Australia, I'm 37 and I spent 10 years in the US Army. I have worked with non profits as a chair member, volunteer, fund raiser and sponsor for a little over 15yrs. I'm an easy going guy though I do have the typical Veteran style dark humor and will joke with EVERYONE at some point. I am passionate about what I do and making positive impacts. It's hard to get me riled up and even though I'm no stranger to conflict, I try to diffuse and avoid it at all cost. I am still learning Spanish and taking classes with local instructors. I have lived and traveled just about everywhere, I have a spinal cord injury which prevents me from living the life I used to but it is also what has lead me to the point of where I am in life now. I enjoy camping, exploring new places, finding new adventures and force myself to work out at times. I am a Padi Staff Instructor for Scuba diving as well as adaptive dive instructor and diver. If we're having a conversation and a dog passes, I'm probably going to vanish mid sentence to chase after the random dog for pets and selfies.

Andrew - I am from Canada and I am fluent in Spanish and have several audio courses here I can share for free as well as offering my time as a tutor while we work together. I am a sail boat captain and a freediving instructor and willing to offer my expertise in both those subjects. I have worked as a designer, writer, and entrepreneur and have traveled extremely extensively for a long period of my life and would consider myself an expert of sourcing products in foreign countries and starting the sort of enterprise you will be volunteering at. I have lived in Colombia for more than 3 years now and traveled extensively here and can offer great advice on where to go. I enjoy lots of company, parties and late hours but know when it's time to work and when it's time to relax. I own a high end imported furniture store and galleria in Medellin.

Ausra - I am originally from Lithuania. Spent just about a decade in Scotland where I gained my two degrees in biology science and design communication. I have volunteered number of times in various projects and world class sport competitions. 12 years of my life I spent competing in rowing and was a team member of the national Lithuanian team as well as team captain which taught me discipline and teamwork but took away party/fun times (working on it that compensation). I would like to say I am hard working, someone who will get sweaty and dirty if I’m passionate about the project. Animal lover for days, just point me the right direction. From 3 of us, I am the one who will always challenge every decision for potential threats. Not so fluent in Spanish (taking some classes at the moment) but I speak fluent Lithuanian, English, basic Russian, French and Polish. Really enjoy good hike, love camping, living off the grid, meeting new interesting people as well as culture myself while going visiting galleries and museums. I am a bit of a weirdo with my own quirks and adore anything and everything related to dinosaurs.

There's so much to learn here, you will be working along side locals, expats, travelers and people of all walks. The language, food and way of life here is worth the trip alone. We are also on an archeological site, a few minutes from the worlds largest natural formed pyramid, a sacrificial alter, etc. We guarantee you will leave here feeling satisfied with your experience. It will be fun and we hope it will open your eyes to new possibilities.
We also offer Spanish and English classes a few times each week with a paid for English/Spanish instructor.

    ***Things that must be said***
Sadly this has to be said. We have had a rash of bad workawayers and a few amazing ones who have made this all worth while.
The biggest issues we've experienced are people exaggeration their qualifications, lying about their abilities and/or refusing to do what they said they were coming to do.
We are accepting volunteer positions, even though we have designed a relaxing and cool place to be, there is still work that needs to be done. We are not a party hostel or hostel at all actually. We have fun and socialize but we are still task oriented and will require you to do some work.
It really is heart breaking to us that we even need to ask this of people, since for us, being considerate and honest is just our natural character.
We opened ourselves up to trust people at their word who in turn, used us or in some cases, made more work for us by trashing the place, urinating on walls, killing plants, breaking equipment, littering, etc.
Please and I cannot stress this enough, do not be that person.

    Please do apply if:
-you are self motivating and don't need to be guided on everything
    -you are considerate and respectful
    -you have common sense
    -you are a decent person

If you are highly skilled and would like to discuss a full time position, those are open at local wages if able to meet the requirements.

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Housing, shared dorms, private rooms, bunk beds, full and queen size beds, couples and family accommodations.

    The accommodations:
We are 1hr (sometimes more) outside of Medellin, Colombia. The weather here is spring time year round. The town the property is located in is called Venecia, it is the gateway to Antioquia and centralized between 4 major areas. It is a small, not very touristy town. There are 3 friendly dogs that live at the property.
We have 4 different accommodation types.
-2 houses located in an upscale area with their own private tennis court, sauna, soccer/fútbol field, pool and cabanas for lounging.
-1 microhome which is in the works located right on site. It's not completed but is still an awesome place to stay.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

    What to do:
For at home and in town activities exclusive to workawayers.
We have a full size tennis court, soccer field and turkish sauna at the main living quarters. We have 2 cabanas next to the pool and (never working) hot tub. We also have a projector, large TVs, video games.
We also have a communal Marijuana jar. Although many of us don't smoke, we understand that many people do and you are welcome to take what you need from the stash. Again, this is Colombia. Medical and personal use is fully legal we just that you don't take more than you need and use responsibly at home.
Please do not inquire with locals for anything like this as we do not want that kind of attention.

At the work site with microhome we have a pool, full size bar and kitchen but all are currently under construction. We have nature trails, swimming holes and hikes on site.
There are archeological sites within walking distance and our property is located on one of them.

We have a private gym in town that is free to use with cable machines, free weights, ropes and everything else you could possibly need. Limited on cardio equipment, we prefer to be outside for that. There are a bunch of hiking spots located around the area from on site hikes from the mirador to the cascades that range from easy to extremely difficult. In the area there are waterfall swimming holes, places to walk, run, swim, etc.

The town offers little in the way of new age comforts but it is coming along slowly. There is one hipster style coffee shop in town, amazing bakeries and many smaller cafes, bars, restaurants, etc. The square is always bustling with people hanging around and just enjoying each other's company but there are no movie theatres, dance clubs, etc. This is a town that values in person conversations, community relations and simple pleasures but also parties hard on weekends/holidays as is the Colombian culture.
