    Description

Hi! My name is Markus, and I recently started a small adventure lodge and community hub on the wild and beautiful island of Senja, Northern Norway.
After several years working in finance and renewable energy, I decided to follow my dream and build something meaningful back home — a place where travelers, locals, and nature meet.

This place is located right by the sea in the small village of Skaland, surrounded by dramatic mountains, beaches, and fjords. From the hotel you can see the midnight sun in summer and the northern lights dancing in winter.

Our vision is to create an inspiring space for adventure seekers and creative people — combining sustainable travel, digital innovation, and local culture.

We’re rebuilding and improving the old hotel and cabins to make it a lively, welcoming base for hiking, kayaking, ski touring, and community gatherings.

I’m lucky to have great people around me — my brother (a carpenter and soon-to-be engineer) helps with construction projects, and we’re working closely with local partners for guiding, local food, and cultural experiences.

If you love the outdoors, slow living, and the idea of helping shape something new from the ground up, you’ll feel at home here. You’ll get to be part of the daily life at a small Arctic lodge, meet travelers from around the world, and explore Senja’s breathtaking nature on your days off.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

We believe in creating connections — between people, nature, and cultures.

As a Workawayer, you’ll not only help with the daily life at the lodge but also become part of a small and welcoming coastal community on Senja, Norway’s wild outer island.

We often share meals, go for hikes, have sauna evenings by the sea, or enjoy a bonfire under the northern lights. You’ll get to experience the true Arctic lifestyle — where weather, light, and seasons shape daily life.

You’ll learn about sustainable hospitality, outdoor guiding, and Arctic nature, and we love learning from you too — whether it’s about your home culture, food, music, or new ideas. Many of our volunteers share skills like photography, cooking, building, or storytelling — all of which add to the creative energy here.

Our goal is that you leave not only with new experiences, but with new friends and a deep connection to this unique corner of the world.

    • Assisting guests with check-in or simple questions
    • Serving breakfast or light meals in the café
    • Outdoor maintenance, gardening, or painting
    • Creative work like photography, social media, or content creation
    • Joining guided tours or hikes if you love nature and the outdoors

    We offer:
💰 Hourly wage: NOK 210 per hour (Norwegian minimum wage equivalent)
🏠 Free accommodation: private room or cabin on-site
    🥣 Access to kitchen
📅 Work schedule: around 25 hours per week (typically 5 hours a day, 5 days a week)

In your free time, you’ll have the chance to explore Senja’s dramatic mountains, fjords, and beaches, meet travellers from around the world, and enjoy life on one of Norway’s most beautiful islands.

Yes! We’re always happy to exchange languages and culture. I speak Norwegian and English fluently, and I’d love to help you practice or learn some Norwegian if you’re interested. In return, I’d love to learn a few words from your language too — it’s a great way to connect and share stories around the dinner table!

  • Accommodation

    Accommodation

Workawayers will stay in our staff house located right next to the main hotel and the fjord.
The house is cozy and fully equipped, about 67 square meters, with a shared kitchen, living room, and bathroom. You’ll have your own private bedroom or share a twin room depending on how many people are staying.

I also live there part of the time, so it’s a friendly and relaxed shared home atmosphere — we often cook meals together or plan small adventures after work.

The house is warm, clean, and surrounded by incredible nature — mountains, beaches, and the ocean are literally right outside the door. Bedding, towels, and Wi-Fi are provided.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

On your time off, you can explore the wild beauty of Senja — hike famous peaks like Husfjellet (the trail head is right outside the doorstep), Segla, and Hesten, visit the beaches at Bøvær and Ersfjord, or enjoy a quiet sauna and swim in the fjord. Go kayaking among the amazing Bergsøyan island right outside the hotel.

There’s a small local shop and café just across the road, and buses connect Skaland with Finnsnes and Tromsø, making it easy to get around even without a car.

At home we value a clean, calm, and respectful atmosphere — teamwork, good energy, and curiosity about nature and people are always welcome. We often share dinners and like to keep the place cozy and social.
