We are an organic farm located about 20 minutes from Victoria, BC on Vancouver Island. We grow a bewildering array of vegetables, fruit, and livestock for 2 restaurants in Victoria and would like to share our beautiful farm with other hard working individuals who are keen to learn more about organic agriculture.
We have a core farm team of 5 with a combined experience of over 20 years in organic farming in BC. Areas of expertise range from organic vegetable production, beekeeping, to mushroom growing, and much more. You can find out more about other aspects of our farm-to-plate operation, like composting of food waste and use of waste vegetable oil and biodiesel as fuels. We are eager to learn more from experienced visitors, too.
Help with Eco project
Travelers will get a taste of what modern farm life is about, will discover the abundance of food that can be grown on a small acreage of land and will work alongside a crew of passionate canadian farmers. They would learn basic techniques in farming and live stock caring.
Possible work projects include weeding, harvesting, post-harvest processing, mowing, trimming, planting, fencing, and animal care. For those with building/construction competence, there are usually small sheds, animal shelters, and other building projects on the go. We are making a push to get ready later this year for farm tours so visitors with a sharp eye for neatness and organization or with experience in other eco-tourism settings would have a lot to offer us, too.
We would like for visitors to work a maximum of 25 hrs/week. This could be 5 hrs/day for 5 days but can be flexible, depending on the guests' wishes and farm work priorities. Guests are welcome to stay for multiple weeks though if wishing to stay past 3 weeks we would like to have a chat during the 3rd week to make sure the arrangement is working for everyone.
There is one large room with 2 beds that can accommodate 2 people in a shared dorm style. We usually cook lunches on a rotating basis and guests would be welcome to join in eating and cooking shared meals if they want. We will have bulk food such as oats, whole grains, and beans available along with farm produce. We generally eat healthy, with lots of fresh vegetables and whole grains and little packaged food. Some workers are vegetarian/farmatarian when it comes to meat so we tend not to eat very much of it in our shared meals. It's not taboo, but if we do cook meat we make sure to provide alternatives for vegetarians during shared meals. There is internet, laundry, shower and bath available. In the main house there is a living room with an old piano and lots of plants where guests can spend their afternoons.
We are conveniently located between the Swartz Bay ferry (routes to Gulf Islands and Vancouver) and Victoria (BC's capital). A small town (Sidney) with most shopping and services is a 15 minute bike ride and there are beaches and hiking within walking distance. Nearest bus stop is about 2 km away but has routes that go straight into Victoria or the ferries. Victoria is a good jumping off point for exploring the rest of Vancouver Island, too.
