We live at the south/north mid point of gorgeous Vancouver Island in a single family home. Our home overlooks the beautiful Pacific Ocean, magnificent Coastal Mountains and the glorious snow capped Vancouver Island mountain ranges. We have a beautiful, large, private yard. We share our home with two fur babies - Lily our border collie/lab medium sized dog and Luka, the fluffiest cat ever.
Hiking and mountain biking trails in the Northwest Pacific rain forest are minutes away. Nordic and alpine skiing are available a half hour away at Mt. Washington. Kayaking and other water sports are available as near as 10 minutes from the house. Kayak in the morning and ski in the afternoon! We have some sports equipment you can use.
Our 3 person family is composed of a mom, dad and our 7 year old. Grams & Gramps live in a suite on the main floor of our home and provide child care and homeschooling support for our child throughout the year - except during their winter travels which is when we want you to visit us! It is in their suite you would stay. Mom is a Social Worker, dad is a Welder, both working hard in busy careers. Most evenings are spent with family, and weekends often include time with extended family. Both of us were raised in the small city we are raising our child in, and have travelled to other countries. Our family loves outdoor activities including biking, motorbiking, paddleboarding, snowboarding, trail building …. as well as more sedentary activities - movies, video and board gaming.
We would want to maintain separate residences and respect each others’ privacy. Dad is more of an introvert, mom loves to socialize when there’s time and energy! Our child enjoys upstairs/downstairs fluidly when grams and gramps are here. If that poses a problem, it could be addressed.Types of help and learning opportunities

Babysitting and creative play
Cultural exchange and learning opportunities
You will learn about life in a small city on the West Coast of Canada, participate in cultural events in our community as well as cultural celebrations of our family, as you wish to (Christmas, New Year’s etc). You will have opportunity to learn about the local Indigenous communities, should that be of interest to you. Outdoor enthusiasts will have access to the many groups and clubs who enjoy outdoor activities - or just have the freedom to explore solo interests. The area is an outdoor enthusiast’s playground.

Our 7 year old happily participates in a regular schedule of schooling activities at home and in the community, supported and guided by an online school. The workload is light, consisting of ‘supporting’ (observing) daily reading and math iPad lessons, finding and sharing educational videos (he has many he likes), nature walks, daily community programs, swimming lessons/leisure swims, climbing gym, horse riding and so on. You would need to hold a valid drivers licence as transportation to and from programs will be needed.Languages
Languages spoken
English: Fluent
French: IntermediateThis host offers a language exchange
We are interested in exploring the fundamentals of other languages - and happy to support learning/fluency of English and French. Having said that, you would need at least intermediate fluency in English to communicate with our English-only child.Accommodation
The person who comes to work and stay with our family will stay in a private entrance, 1 bedroom, 1 bathroom ground floor suite. The suite is fully furnished including a kitchenette with all the equipment you need for food preparation. A shared laundry is available in the suite.
For the most part you will be responsible to provide your own food/cook your own meals.
We live on the upstairs main floor.
Our house is non-smoking.What else ...
Public transportation is available in the front of the house but a vehicle may be available for short trips on your off time. There is public transportation to the ski hill.
The worker will need to be able to provide references that will give confidence that they are safe to be left alone and provide care for a young child.
Some compensation will be provided as worker needed for 6.5 hrs/day.A little more information
