Located in the Al-Amari refugee camp in Ramallah, the Society was formed in 1998 by community members in response to a great need within the Amari refugee camp to provide care and assistance for people with special needs. We believed it was important to create a safe space where both disabled and able-bodied individuals could interact and connect. We have continued to provide this service, but have also expanded our services to reach others within the community.
SOME OF OUR PROJECTS:
-DAILY ARTS AND CRAFTS with disabled members of the community
-IFTAR MEAL COOKING AND DISTRIBUTION to families in need during Ramadan (*️️️️️️️️️️If you have skills in COOKING, this is a good time to come! For this project, we partner with local women in the community to cook and distribute Iftar meals. It is a great opportunity to learn about local cuisine, and experience daily life in the camp.)
-SUMMER CAMP filled with fun activities aimed at increasing interaction between able-bodied and disabled people (*️️️️️️️️️️Good for volunteers with experience teaching or leading activities with children or people with disabilities)
- DISTRIBUTIONS OF FOOD AND CLOTHING to poor families
Additionally, we are always interested in volunteers who have experience with social media and websites. Currently our building is under construction, so we do not have any on-going projects at this time, but if you are in Ramallah and want to come have a visit and a chat, we are happy to welcome you.
We are also looking forward to beginning an ENGLISH TEACHING PROGRAM in the end of February of 2019, so at that time we will be seeking volunteers with fundraising or teaching experience and initiative who can help us to kick-start this project! Preferably, we would like English teaching volunteers who can stay from 1-3 months to have consistency and continuity in the classes.
We are also opening up a speech therapy center in November and could use an Arabic speaking speech therapist!
We look forward to welcoming you in Al-Amari!

People who volunteer with us will have the chance to learn about Palestinian culture, traditions, religion, and even learn Arabic if they want to. They will also have the chance to experience life in the refugee camp and learn about the national Palestinian struggle.
Hours required for volunteers differs depending on the time of year or which projects you wish to help out with, so feel free to write us a message asking for more details.
If you have any other experience or skills/talents that you think would be useful, we want to hear from you!

Our building is located in the heart of the Al-Amari refugee camp. The volunteer apartment is on the third floor, and contains multiple spacious bedrooms with up to 4 beds in each room. There is a common area and kitchen, and hot water in the showers. Accommodation is basic, but comfortable. Because the apartment is in the center of the camp, it is important for volunteers to be aware and respectful of the local conservative culture. Clothes covering the shoulders and knees should be worn when walking through the camp. Because the volunteer apartment is only shared with other volunteers, once inside the apartment, volunteers can feel at ease and live comfortably (keeping in mind to be respectful to each other).
The camp is a 15-20 minute walk or 5 minute drive to Ramallah's city center. There you'll find plenty of shopping, bars, restaurants, cafes, museums, galleries, a movie theater, etc.
Ramallah is also centrally located within the West Bank and there is public transportation to take you anywhere to want to go, including Bethlehem, Jericho, Hebron, Nablus, and Jerusalem.
