    Description

Namaste! My name is Sumer. I live with my family of six people in Khathsar [Osian], nearby Jodhpur in Rajasthan, northern India. We run a small homestay with traditional Rajasthani mud huts and have an organic farm where we grow millet and other crops. We also have five cows, two goats, five camels and two cats. Our home is located in a rural area in the Thar desert, with sandunes and lots of wildlife.

We operate a school for the local village children out of our own home. We have approximately 20 students aged 5-15 that are learning English and computer skills. We are looking for volunteers to come help teach these skills to the children. We love to have guests from all over the world come to stay with our family to experience a rural, authentic Rajasthani village life, be connected to the beautiful nature around, while making a significant difference in the lives of local children who would not get this opportunity without your help.

Travellers will be able to experience a unique and authentic Rajasthani lifestyle at our home. In our small village of around 200 people you will be treated like part of our family. You can experience many traditional activities such as cooking over an open fire, using local farming techniques, working with camels, making chai with fresh cow milk, playing Rajasthani music/games, etc...! The Thar desert is a unique ecosystem and culture with large stretches of sand dunes, native animal and bird species, and beautiful greenery and flowers during the rainy season. We speak our local languages of Marwadi and Hindi and would love to teach you our favorite sayings and phrases

Our volunteers can choose what type of help they want to do based on their interests and experience! We are also very flexible with helping times and amount.

We are most in need of volunteers to teach introductory and intermediate English to local students. Additionally, we need help teaching basic computer skills like typing for the children. No training in these subjects is required on your behalf - only English fluency and basic computer skills are required.

Workawayers may either sleep indoors in our traditional mud huts or inside our home. Rooms are simple but very comfortable, and at our home we have a common Western toilet and shower. You may also sleep outdoors underneath the stars, on the rooftop or in the garden. The area we live in is very peaceful, safe, and quiet.

For food, we cook vegetarian food made with homegrown and local ingredients. A meal will typically consist of chapati/roti, rice, vegetables and dal, and curd. We are happy to accommodate different dietary requests such as vegan, gluten free, etc.

Our village is a beautiful place to explore and in your free time you can go trekking, play with the local children, and visit nearby sunset and sunrise spots. We can help to arrange transport into Osian town (~13kms) for more city life. From Osian, there are also local busses every 30 minutes into Jodhpur and a train connecting to other cities in the state such as Jaisalmer.
