Dear Workawayers,
Located in the Al-Amari refugee camp in Ramallah, our society was formed in 1998 by community members in response to a great need within the Al Amari refugee camp to provide care and assistance for people with special needs. We believed it was important to create a safe space where both disabled and able-bodied individuals could interact and connect. We have continued to provide this service, but have also expanded our services to reach others within the community.
SOME OF OUR PROJECTS:
-ENGLISH LANGUAGE PLAYROOM for all ages.*
-DAILY ARTS AND CRAFTS with disabled members of the community
-IFTAR MEAL COOKING AND DISTRIBUTION to families in need during Ramadan. If you have skills in COOKING, this is a good time to come! For this project, we partner with local women in the community to cook and distribute Iftar meals. It is a great opportunity to learn about local cuisine, and experience daily life in the camp.
-SUMMER CAMP filled with fun activities aimed at increasing interaction between able-bodied and disabled people
- DISTRIBUTIONS OF FOOD AND CLOTHING to poor families
-HELP WITH MAINTAINING SOCIAL MEDIA AND WEBSITES. We need volunteers who have experience with website design and/or social media.
-ONGOING HELP WITH FUNDRAISING NEW PROJECTS including the development of a dental and medical clinic, distribution of medical equipment for the disabled, and a lift for the Society building. Volunteers who have experience with fundraising are very welcome.
-VOLUNTEERS WITH EXPERIENCE IN FIELDS OF MEDICINE, DENTAL, AND SPEECH THERAPY to help out in the on-site clinic.*
-ROOFTOP GARDEN*
-DESIGN YOUR OWN VOLUNTEER EXPERIENCE! Have other skills or ideas for our camp? We are open to new ideas! Contact us to discuss creating your own volunteer experience.
We look forward to welcoming you to Al-Amari!

Our building is located in the heart of the Al-Amari refugee camp. The volunteer apartment is on the third floor and contains multiple spacious bedrooms with up to 4 beds in each room. There is a common area and kitchen as well as hot water in the showers. Accommodation is basic but comfortable. Because the apartment is in the center of the camp, it is important for volunteers to be aware and respectful of the local conservative culture. Clothes covering the shoulders and knees should be worn when walking through the camp. Because the volunteer apartment is only shared with other volunteers, once inside the apartment, volunteers can feel at ease and live comfortably (keeping in mind to be respectful to each other).
The camp is a 15-20 minute walk or 5 minute bus ride to Ramallah's city center. There, you'll find plenty of shopping, bars, restaurants, cafes, museums, galleries, a movie theater, etc.
Ramallah is also centrally located within the West Bank and there is easy and cheap public transportation to take you anywhere you want to go, including Bethlehem, Jericho, Hebron, Nablus, and Jerusalem.
