Our Foundation, in Chiang Rai province, Northern Thailand, manages a girls' and boys' boarding home and covers school costs for poor, vulnerable, at-risk, ethnic Akha hilltribe teenagers who live at the homes, promoting the importance of education and cultural preservation. We support Akha youth of any religion (Buddhist, Christian and traditional believers in animism), aged 10 and older. We focus on providing practical support, educational opportunities and a safe, warm and loving environment for Akha hilltribe adolescents. We currently look after 30 kids, in 2 separate locations.
Travellers will learn about the situation of hilltribes in Thailand, some Akha culture, and might get to visit a village. Also, how these children, mostly from single-parent families or with a parent in jail or addicted to drugs, can still enjoy life and turn into great kids.
As the kids attend school during the day, volunteers are expected to come in after school from 5-8.30pm to play with the kids, tutor them in English and help them with English homework. On weekends, they can do a longer activity, such as an art project/drama/sports/cooking. They may also be asked to help the Foundation Manager with light admin work. Basically, come and be part of the family and learn about the Akha culture.
Due to being a charity/boarding home, we don't have any spare bedrooms for volunteers. We do provide dinner, with the kids, and daily pick-up/drop off from town center as there are no cheap guesthouses nearby so our volunteers stay in town.
We are CLOSED during summer break MARCH to mid-MAY, term holidays for all of OCT and for 2wks over Xmas/New Yr.
We'd prefer volunteers come for 2wks minimum, to make it worthwhile.
The hot season in Northern Thailand is from March-May, monsoon is July-Sep and cold season is Oct-Dec. Transport is not provided; most volunteers rent a motorbike but we can offer a bicycle to get to and from the hostel. It is located about 15 minutes from town center.
