    Who we are:
We are 3 volunteer teachers (Arun, Theresa and Thelma) We teach around 30 children at a childrens home run by a local charity. We ourselfs are not part of this charity and are serving only in a private capacity at the request of the charity director. Our intention is to help these children with skills to break the cycle of poverty. We have been teaching these children since Sept 2017. We ourselves were lucky to have good teachers, which is the gift we would like to give back to society / these children.

    What we do:
We teach basic maths and english. The children are between 7-17 years old and we divide them up into 3 groups roughly by age / aptitude. Our teaching sessions are 3 times a week i.e. Mon, Wed, Thur 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm. Besides maths and english we aim to expose them to a variety of experiences / interactions. Hence - Workway. The location where we teach is Kulashekar in Mangalore.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

You will get to make an impression on young children, eager to listen and learn from people all over the world.

You will get a very unique insight into their lives, their family background, educational standard and future prospects. The children are mostly from poorer parts of Karnataka. You will get to see how the system works (or doesn't work) for them and what we can do to tilt the balance in their favour.

You will get to taste some special (many times secret ) old Manglorean food cooked by Lucy-bai

Circumstances and availability permitting - You will meet a lot of my 'dyed in the wool' local friends who will take you / show you things no tourist would ever find by themselves.

    The job:
We welcome volunteers who can interact with the children during the stipulated time (Mon, Wed, Thur 3.30 pm to 6.30 pm). Volunteers are free to decide what they would like to teach, play, talk with the children. We have had volunteers who have explained their travels and adventures, shown pictures & other things (eg: one showed NYPD police badge). One German volunteer has discussed sex education with the elder children. Acclaimed Poets, Foreign travelers, Artists, Business people and Social workers have already visited the children. We are happy that this wide / international exposure is making a big difference. For those workawayers without any specific skill set or plan, we will be happy to accommodate you next to either Theresa / Thelma so you can assist them during a session. We expect that workawayers will commit to at least 3 teaching sessions (3.30 pm to 6.30 pm x 3 times, spread over approx 1 week). Transport to / from will be provided
