  • Description

We are a family from El Remate, who have an experimental farm, where we work with silvopastoralism for organic cattle. About two years ago we started an agroforestry project for native trees and other crops to improve the feeding of animals, as well as to implement permaculture consisting of ancient Mayan medicinal native plants.

With several ideas in mind, we built two Cabins to accommodate volunteers to help us continue to be more and more sustainable. And it emerged recently as a result of the fact that the school is closed due to the pandemic, the project with local boys and girls so that they would have a place to meet, spend time living together and learning about permaculture knowledge. The group has been growing and we have done several awareness activities that have called many others to join the group of "Los Jagures". Success and enthusiasm have made us dream of continuing to educate, train and help children and thanks to the donations made by a volunteer who visited us, we now have the foundations to build a school that will be called New World Ecological School.

    Cultural exchange and learning opportunities

The cultural exchange is very intensive, since one lives day by day with the peasants, the boys and girls, the families in a quiet place surrounded by the jungle. You will get to know many plants and their uses, trees and animals. It will be known how to live in the field and on the land. Their discovery, awareness, reforestation activities will be shared with the Jaguars ... and obviously they will improve their Spanish.
In addition, there is the possibility of accompanying the founder of the project in his work as a forest ranger in the jungle and accessing the hidden pyramid of El Mirador, learning survival tactics in the middle of the jungle.

  • Help

There are many things to do to help the project grow, and that is why we need your help! From helping with feeding and caring for the animals, planting and replanting, caring for permaculture crops ... to continuing to build the school, creating activities and workshops for the children, teaching them different skills and helping them with English. We also welcome help with our social media pages and fundraisers for funds and materials.

  • Accommodation

We have three spaces enabled to accommodate volunteers, with mattresses and a place for hammocks or a tent. The place is a 10-minute walk from the town and the Péten Itzá lake, and is isolated from any urban noise surrounded by vegetation.
At night you can see the stars and you can hear toads and howler monkeys. We have some basic light, a dry sink, and a wood stove. Nearby there is another lagoon that can be seen from the place.
There is no wifi but the phone signal arrives perfectly.Volunteers can go down to the village to a family cafe restaurant if they want to use wifi.
Water will be provided and some humble shared meals with tortillas, beans, rice, and mangos from the finca.

  • What else ...

    What else ...

El Remate is a small and cozy town, very quiet and safe, on the edge of Lake Petén Itzá, with pristine and transparent water (it is the cleanest lake in Guatemala!). There are several docks from which to go swimming. There are little shops with everything you need and it is a place with many travelers. We are the entrance to the Mayan ruins of Tikal, one of the most famous and impressive archaeological sites. There are also biotopes to walk around. Finally, we are half an hour from the island of Flores.
