Hi, my name is Miina! I am originally from Helsinki, Finland, but I have moved around and travelled a lot in my life. I am 26 years old and a recent graduate who is looking for her next step and wishes to get out of the city. Now I am looking for a farm(s) to go this spring and get my hands dirty.

I studied environmental sciences for my bachelors and continued into creative sustainability for my masters. My main focus has been sustainable food systems, agroecology and design. I have volunteered at farms in the Netherlands, France, Denmark, Italy, and Finland. They’ve all been different from one another from CSA farms to agroturismo to hobby farms. The work has consisted of sowing, harvesting, weeding, and construction at the farm. They have all been very educational experieneces and I feel my best in the countryside. My dream is ultimately to have my own farm/food project in Finland so I am eager to work and learn about different methods on farms and gardens of all sizes and types. Besides that I am trained as a sailor and work seasonally on traditionally rigged tallships , so I am not scared to manual labour and enjoy being outside no matter the weather.

I am very open and social. I like meeting and talking to new people, which is maybe why I enjoy workaway so much. I am used to living and working communally. I also understand the need to respect people’s boundaries and space especially when living in shared spaces.

One of the reasons why I jump at the chance to do workaway whenever my life gives me a spot for it is that I have met some of my best friends through the farmstays I have been at. I love the social aspect of the work exchange and really enjoy working in a team. And I still remember my previous hosts fondly and have learned a lot from them.

Was könntest du arbeiten?

I am not a stranger to farm or garden work due to my previous volunteering experiences. I am a quick learner of anything that is new to me and happy to expand my skills and knowledge. Most of the farms I have been on have utilized organic, agroecological or permaculture methods.

When it comes to fixing and building I can follow directions well. I have helped fix stuff on the farms, I have worked at a shipyard and in festival construction.

I have also done many creative jobs. I do photography and studied it. I love art – especially environmental art– and making all kinds of things, which makes me curious for all opportunities to learn new techniques of art or craftsmanship (for example I find ecological infrastructure very interesting).

I there are guests or customers, I have volunteered in an agroturismo farm and worked in cafe/restaurant settings before so I will adapt easily. I enjoy working in teams and truly believe in the power of collaborative effort. I am also certified in First Aid, Marine Safety and Fire Safety.

Was noch ...

Besides sailing, I love hiking, camping, and backpacking (and I have even some tales about hitchhiking competitions). I love to crochet, paint, photography and baking. I always carry cards with me and I love boardgames. I started playing chess last year. I will also try to find the sunniest spot in the garden and read.
