Hey everyone!

I’m Lilla (28) from Budapest. In May 2024, I set off on an incredible journey across Europe with my partner. After eight months of traveling together, he decided to take a break, while I chose to keep exploring solo for a while.
This adventure is all about discovering new places, meeting amazing people, and improving my language skills along the way.

Here’s a little rundown of where I’ve been so far:

AUSTRIA
Farm near Linz:
🐓 Feeding and caring for horses, cats, and chickens, walking with the dogs
🛠 Doing renovation work: painting rooms (a lot!) and fixing fences

Graz:
🐓 Feeding chickens
🌱 Helping out with gardening: trimming hedges, weeding, planting trees, and watering plants
🛠 Building a chicken coop
🧹 Household chores: vacuuming and cleaning
🍚 Making jam! (I think I’m becoming a jam expert.)

Hasselbach (near Vienna):
🐓 Feeding chickens
🌱 Helping out with gardening: mowing the lawn, weeding
🧹 Household chores
🍚 More jam-making!
🛠 Assembling furniture

ITALY:
🧹 Household chores: general cleaning, vacuuming, washing windows, car cleaning—pretty much everything!
🌱 Watering plants

SPAIN - Valencia:
🌱 Gardening: weeding, harvesting fruits and veggies
🐓 Feeding chickens
👶 Babysitting the kiddos🛠 Helping to build an outdoor dome (I really enjoy building things!)

DENMARK:
🐓 Helping out on a farm: feeding and caring for goats, rabbits, donkeys, and ponies, walking with the dogs
🧹 Helping with household tasks

NORWAY - VOLLEN:
🛠 Preparing a concrete foundation, building a fence, building a rabbit hutch
🎨 Candle and pottery making
🌱 Pruning trees and removing invasive plants

NORWAY - TROLLBORGEN:
🐶 House and dog-sitting
🪓 Cutting wood

IRELAND - Near Bandon
🌷packing flower bulbs

My next stop will be Portugal, where I'll be working at a guesthouse until mid-April. :)

I’m a huge animal lover, so anywhere I get to spend time with furry, feathered, or hooved friends is an absolute win for me!

A little more about me:

I graduated at 24 as a high school math and biology teacher. After teaching for two years, I switched to the NGO world and started working at the Hungarian Cyclists’ Club. I love biking and hiking in my free time. I’ve led my students on hikes in the High Tatras and climbed Triglav. I hate being bored, so I’m always up to something! Currently, I’m trying to learn German (any help is appreciated!), and I enjoy solving puzzles like Sudoku and jigsaws, reading good books, and having deep conversations over a glass of wine.

I don’t smoke, and while I do enjoy a drink every now and then, I mostly try to eat healthy. I’m not a vegetarian, but skipping meat is no problem for me!

As I travel, I’m all about mixing things up, making new connections, improving my languages, and soaking up the culture of each place I visit.

I can’t wait to meet you along the way! :)

I’ve always been an enthusiastic and adaptable learner, excited to take on new adventures and challenges! :)

During my university years, I worked in various jobs, starting with late-night restaurant cleaning, then spending two years as a cinema cashier. After that, I handled telephone customer service while also working as a private tutor, helping students reach their goals. In my final university year, I even took on a part-time high school teaching position, which later turned into a full-time role for two years after graduation.

Creating my own home was also an exciting challenge. From painting the walls to furnishing and organizing every little detail, I made sure to turn it into a cozy and comfortable space.

I’m always open to new challenges and eager to dive into new opportunities with enthusiasm! 😊

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Take care of a big dog in a ...)

From November 5th to December 1st, we spent nearly four weeks at Christophe's cabin in Norway. The time we spent there was certainly unique. While walking Mishka takes only about an hour a day, if you arrive during the winter months, the daily tasks will require significantly more time.

Drinking water needs to be collected either from a gas… read more station (a 25-minute walk each way) or from the town (35 minutes—15 minutes walking and 20 minutes by bus). Showers are only available in Honnefoss. Heating the cabin involves chopping wood, and washing dishes can be a time-consuming task, especially when the weather is freezing. Laundry can only be done using heated spring water. It's also important to have unlimited mobile data, as there’s no Wi-Fi in the cabin.

Oslo is a little over two hours away, and while it’s not impossible to get there, note that the last bus from Honnefoss departs at 6:05 PM (or as early as 2:05 PM on Saturdays). After that, returning to the cabin is only possible by taxi, which can be quite expensive.

It’s worth noting that the cabin is not in the same condition as portrayed in some of the uploaded photos—one of the pictures is not even taken inside the cabin. When we arrived, the cabin was unfortunately in poor condition. The kitchen cabinet was filled with mouse droppings from the previous winter, the floor was muddy, and all the kitchen utensils were unwashed, left by the lake. Christophe hadn’t left any chopped firewood for us, only wet logs that produced a lot of smoke. Additionally, the stove was clogged, causing smoke to continuously flow back into the room.

If you arrive during the colder months, you should also expect mice to come into the cabin at some point. We managed to catch the mouse eventually, but it took several attempts. It was also quite uncomfortable to find mouse droppings on the kitchen table every morning.

After the initial challenges, we cleaned the cabin, unclogged the stove, and established a daily routine. We eventually started enjoying our stay. The view is stunning, and there are excellent hiking opportunities in the area. We also spent a lot of time at the cozy Honnefoss library. Mishka is a wonderful dog, and we loved playing search games with her in the forest.

However, we ended up leaving 9 days earlier than planned. We were uncertain whether Christophe would reimburse our expenses as promised. Despite assurances that the fridge would be stocked and weekly reimbursements would be made, this was not entirely the case.

Ultimately, we decided to leave because we did not want to stay in the cabin at our own expense, and Christophe’s communication about covering costs was unclear.

This was our first negative Workaway experience. While Christophe suggested that we struggled because we’re "city people," we firmly believe every traveler deserves a clean bed and sufficient food, even if their main responsibility is caring for a dog.
