We are Delia and Pablo, a married couple (38 years old) from Valencia and Murcia, in the south-east of Spain. Both of us held a PhD degree in Electronics engineering in the field of Machine Learning (2015) and, since then, we have worked as researchers at the University of Valencia (Spain) and in several IT companies at the R&D department. Due to our professional background, we have a working knowledge of IT, computers and programming languages.

As a side project, we have recently launched a small personal project connected with our main passions: food and travels. It is a website about simple and healthy recipes around the world that allow you to travel and discover new cultures from your kitchen. Pablo has developed the website from scratch and Delia is the content creator (recipes and photography). Please take a look if you are curious:

Foodisea is also on social networks to let more people discover our website. From our Instagram account we share recipes, additional content about food and cultures and a lot of fun games through Instagram stories (mainly funny facts about cultures and food):

Our mindset is quite similar. We are open-minded, easy to talk to about everything and ready to learn some stuff from everybody. We are interested in alternative lifestyles and curious about all different cultures. In our opinion, every new experience is important in your life, since it teaches us something, whether it is good or bad. We enjoy little things in life because they are really the great things, such as enjoying nature, taking a cup of tea while having a nice chat, or trying a delicious new dish. Each moment is a good moment to be happy, so a vital rule is not postponing things that make you happy until tomorrow!

We have a lot of different interests, such as nature, outdoor activities (such as hiking, surfing or snorkeling), doing yoga, reading books, cooking, watching movies and TV series, listening to whatever kind of music, playing board games, photography, traveling or learning languages, among others. In addition, we really love spending time in our small self-consume orchard, where we grow delicious fresh vegetables together with two other friends.

We are passionate about traveling. Without a doubt, it is the best way to discover new cultures and grow personally. This is an Instagram account we created just for sharing our favourite pictures of our travels and some learnings about the world, in case you are interested in knowing more about us. In general, we love talking, laughing and joining whatever activity, so it will be great fun to share different points of view and cultures! Regarding this cultural exchange, we are willing to prepare some Spanish dishes and to teach you our mother language: Spanish. In this sense, it could be really exciting to learn how to cook traditional dishes of your country. In addition, we would like to improve our English fluency and start to learn whatever new language.

We have joined the Workaway community because we both love giving back to our community and we would like to spend time volunteering for causes we are passionate about. So far, we have already had incredible experiences in workaway in Sri Lanka (collaborating in a permaculture farm), South Korea (taking care of a small orchard), New Zealand (helping in a family blueberry farm) and in Kenya (staying with a Maasai family and helping with their small farm and daily chores).

We would love to learn more about gardening and farming. We could also share our experience in photography, web development, social media management and yoga and assist in any related task. Anyway, we could help with everything else as long as you can explain to us what to do, and we will be really happy to help and to learn new things!

To sum up, we are an easy-going, fun-loving, responsible couple that would love to get to know you and make ourselves helpful in any way we can!

Vom Workawayer (delia_pablo) für Host (Get a real experience of ...)

We have spent almost two weeks at Ashok's farm. The place is well located in the outskirts of Pokhara (in the Lovely hill neighborhood), so you don't have the feeling of being in a city, but you can walk to the city in a few minutes. The house is quite big. It has room for Ashok's large family (wife, three wonderful children, his parents and… read more sometimes relatives), and there is still enough room for a few workawayers.

The working hours and meals are well defined. Starting with coffee/tea from 7:00 to 7:30, then 3 hours of work, a dal bhat around 11:00 and another dal bhat at 19:00. The rest of the day you have free time to explore the area. Saturdays are off (as usual in Nepal). Normally Ashok shares meals with the workawayers, while the rest of the family eats at another table (it would be very difficult to eat all together because there are too many people).

They also provide free drinking (boiled) water. And, depending on the season, you can buy fruit directly from them (much better quality than at the market!) or fresh milk from their cows. You can also do your laundry at an affordable price if you need it.

In our case, the work was always related to agriculture. Ashok has a medium-sized plot of land with a vegetable garden, a greenhouse, some animals (cows, chickens and a buffalo), many coffee plants and trees (banana, avocado, mango and many more). We did different tasks, from picking (and processing) coffee beans, planting garlic and radishes, picking grass for the animals, planting tomatoes, etc.
Ashok is very hard working and passionate about organic farming. If you are interested, you can probably learn a lot from him. On the other hand, he previously worked as a trekking guide, so he can give you some tips for your next trek. In fact, on Saturday we did an interesting hike during the morning with him and the rest of workawayers.

We were lucky enough to stay here during Tihar (Hindu deepawali festival), one of the most important festivals in Nepal. The family was very generous and shared with us most of the celebrations, so we had the opportunity to try different foods and be part of the Tihar traditions.

In addition to spending time with Ashok (and his family), we spent a lot of time with other workers. We met interesting people from many countries and had a great time together.

Although we have had other experiences as workawayers, we feel that each experience is very different. This time was also different, but very recommendable and enjoyable, as always!

Vom Workawayer (delia_pablo) für Host (Stay with a Maasai family ...)

We could say that our stay with John, Rachel and their beautiful and smart kids (Stanley, Clinton and Precious) has been a life-changing experience and undoubtedly one of the best experience ever. We spent there two wonderful weeks experiencing a memorable cultural exchange between Kenya-Spain.

They live in a humble place but full of love and you will find more than enough. We really miss having showers with buckets as the sun heated our body, what a wonderful feeling. A life completely integrated into nature following a more natural rhythm (for example, going to bed early at night but waking up with sunrise). It was such a great experience to live in a farm full of animals inside and outside the house (cows, goats, cats, dogs, chickens, etc). Unfortunately, there was a huge drought that time, so animals struggled to find food and water. We hope that it rains soon.

We experienced the daily life with the family and enjoyed every single second. Sometimes we helped Rachel prepare the food, water the trees, clean the dishes, etc., but at our own pace and without a hurry. One of the best things was to slow down the rhythm in comparison with western countries that you always feel overwhelmed and in a hurry and life goes by too fast just running from one point to another. We played a lot with the children, they are the most intelligent, kind and lovely children in the world. We really love them and the complete family made us feel comfortable and part of their family.

Rachel is a great cook and we really miss their staple Kenyan food but very tasty and healthy (ugali, chapati, rice, githery, beans, cabbage, greens, tea, etc). It is impressive how she can cook amazing dishes using just wood and fire.

A few days, we joined John with his daily tasks running two small pubs around and buying grass for the cows. And once he took us to Kiserian (the closest big city around) to show us the cows and meat market.

In addition, we had the chance to learn a lot about Maasai and Kenyan culture. They did a great job to teach us how they live and how society works there. We went with the family to church every Sunday, and it was a great experience to meet the community and enjoy with their amazing local songs and dances.

One of our days there, we went to the closest primary school and taught Maths to children. There are several schools in the area and they are really happy to have visitors around the world. So, if you are interested in teaching, probably there is plenty of choice there.

Everyday we went for a walk until the shopping center of the small village. It is really close (just 10 minutes walking) and you can find small shops for basic things (fruits, toilet paper, water, etc.) and hotels (small local restaurants) to eat a chapati with a tea or beans and chat with friendly local people.

We gave the family a small fee per day and person for contributing with our expenses there. We think that it is a good idea to talk about this topic in advance to get the best agreement for both parts before arriving in order to avoid misunderstandings. It is good to know that communication with John was really easy and fast.

You can get the village by public transport from Nairobi: a matatu from Nairobi to Kiserian and then a smaller matatu (more similar to a car instead of a van and without any sign of the route outside the car) from Kiserian to Ilgnaroj (the maasai village). This way to get is the cheapest (around 500 KES) and also the most adventurous. We used this way to come back to Nairobi. Also, if required, John could pick you up from any place at a good price (talk to him for more information).

We know that we will come back to Kenya again and in particular to Ilnaroj. We appreciate very much their kindness and love. You are now also part of our family. Thank you very much for everything our dear friends! We miss you and Kenya very much. We really love you.
