Beschreibung
Hello :) We are a couple from Liège in Belgium. My partner, Nathan, was born and raised there and I was born in Luxembourg and moved to Belgium for my university studies.
Nathan and I are taking a break from our work and traveling around South America for one year. Nathan is a mechanical engineer and I am a medical physicist in Radiotherapy. We both needed to take a step back from our busy lives and discover other ways of living. We left with a lot of questions on our minds ( what kind of future do we want to build for ourselves…) and maybe by meeting new people, new cultures and discovering new work possibilities, some of those questions will be answered. Although we will probably uncover new questions 😅
We have strong ecological beliefs and therefore we try to travel as sustainably as possible. We will try and get back to Europe on a cargo sailing boat ⛵️We also wish to learn about sustainable farming and construction.
This sabbatical year is also an opportunity for us to improve our very basic Spanish. Before leaving for South America, we took a Spanish evening course.
We are looking forward to sharing skills, languages and cultures :)
We were also part of a permaculture association back home. We were not participating much in the tasks apart from picking our vegetables ourselves. And we would love to change that and learn more.
Noémie: I am a bit shy and introverted, but I love to share about books, films and travel stories. I love going on an adventure, especially if it’s in nature. I love hiking and wild camping and spotting wild animals. I enjoy drawing and photography and gardening. It’s my first time on Workaway, but I have travelled quite a lot before. I have travelled alone in Asia and with Nathan in Europe.
I never feel as free as when I am traveling and I really wanted to experience traveling for a long time. I do like my job, although I wouldn’t say I am passionate about it. The work environment I was in was starting to weigh on me and it was the right moment to get away from it. I want to discover more manual jobs and see if I enjoy them or not. I come from a very tight family (Cousins, Uncles and Aunts), we meet for Christmas and in summer in our family home. Since we were little we have always participated in taking care of our family home. Gardening, chopping wood, cooking, picking apples … We play a lot of games outside as well as board games around the fire.
Nathan: I am an easygoing and curious person. At work, I love to teach new employees and help them out. I love sharing my knowledge. However, to others I am a bit slow. It may be due to the fact that I like things to be well organised and well-made.
A lot has changed in the past years. Resulting in me quitting my job as a mechanical engineer in a big company and starting this new adventure with Noémie in South America.
I was asking myself a lot of questions: Why am I working in an office most of the day and developing things that are not necessary to humans and that aren't sustainable?
Our trip in South America is only the beginning of this interrogation. I need to experience new things together with Noémie and other people who can show us their lifestyle and share their insights. :-)
I had the chance to study for a year in Kiruna, a small city in Lapland (Sweden) (that was already 10 years ago). It made me realise how much I like nature and opened my mind about living with other cultures (as the campus welcomed many international students). Still, I was a bit immature and went back to the same life as before. After 8 years of working, it is time for me to make some changes in my lifestyle.
I think Workaway is a great way of continuing this journey. That would be our first experience in this field but I think we could bring good vibes and some skills to the adventure as we renovated our apartment from scratch 4 years ago (we made some of our furniture ourselves). I also like mechanical/technical stuff. We also try pottery (turning and modeling). We're far from being pros, but we really love it. I would love to learn some more.
Other than that, I really like reading (fantasy books are my favorites) and doing sports (spikeball, ultimate frisbee, tennis/padel, skiing), even if I feel I was not taking enough time to do them back at home.
And I guess you got it but we love walking in nature, hiking and camping 🏕️ !

Was könntest du arbeiten?
Noémie : I have worked as a bartender and as a French and Math teacher during high school. I am also quite good at English. I have a bachelor’s degree in physics and a master’s degree in medical physics. I am also okay at drawing. I helped my partner renovating our appartement. I have acquired a few skills such as putting tiles, installing a false ceiling, painting walls etc. I can take care of indoor plants, as well as the basic outdoor plants.
Nathan: I can teach French, Maths and Physics. I am good at DIYs. As mentioned I have fully renovated our apartment ( except for the plumbing). I did almost the whole electrical circuit, I took down a wall and built one. I put some tiles on the floor and walls. I also built some furniture out of wood.
