Had a few career changes but currently an electronics engineer/programmer. Formerly biochemist, kids science teacher and done some labouring, basic carpentry
and landscaping.

I have a little bit of experience gardening and growing my own vegetables but am very keen to learn more. I am also very interested in learning about how to live sustainably and would love to gain some experience in farming, off-grid electrical energy and carpentry (I have some basic experience with this already). I am quite active & healthy and enjoy hiking & camping as much as I can so I would ideally like to stay with people who are happy to show me around. I don't smoke, can happily adapt to a full vegetarian diet if needed and am generally very low maintenance. I play a little bit of saxophone (and piano) so please let me know if there is/is not anywhere I can practice without making enemies! :)

I’m quite considerate of noise and a very light sleeper myself so dorm style accommodation can be difficult for longer periods.

Not a master chef but have a couple of nice recipes and enjoy cooking for groups.

I have several months experience as a landscaper/gardener in addition to a small amount of carpentry experience (basic framing). I'm a very quick learner and fascinated by the natural world, I am hoping to build the skills over the next few years to live sustainably off-grid myself. If you can teach me anything about gardening /farming (particularly aquaponics), construction or electrical systems I will apply myself 100%.

  None, I'll eat anything and hate seeing food to go to waste! Can and have gone strictly vegetarian for weeks with no problems and don't mind doing it again if needs be. Veganism would be a challenge but I could do it for a few weeks

Vom Workawayer () für Host (Organic gardening and project ...)

I came to the Quinta for 3-4 weeks, ended up staying for more than 7 and by the time I left it felt like a second home. Joanna & Jaime are fantastic hosts; warm, welcoming and witty as well as being genuinely committed to living sustainably and encouraging others to do the same. They are heavily involved with several business in the Azores through… read more their sustainability consultancy business and it was quite impressive to see people not just content to reduce their own impact on the planet but to be real drivers to get others to do so as well.

Onto the workaway; the accommodation was well above what I expected. I swapped between guest rooms, volunteer accommodation and an unused sewing room and even that was lovely and comfortable. Most likely you will be in the volunteer loft which is a cost room with its own sitting room to relax next door and private bathroom. The kitchen was fully equipped for anything & everything you would want to cook or bake and the plentiful fresh herbs and vegetables from the garden meant this was also the first workaway where I didn’t lose weight!. Perhaps I was lucky to be there during a bit of a lull in tourism due to covid and while tomatoes & squash were still in season but you could quite feasibly feed yourself entirely from what grew at the Quinta and the variety is only going to improve over the years. I ate extremely well throughout my time there and there was also a steady stream of leftover bread & yoghurt when guests left as well as a couple of events hosted by Joanna & Jaime where the food was incredible.

The work was a mix of weeding, sowing, planting, harvesting, looking after cats and I also got the chance to work on building a flow form fountain; which was a great experience learning from Joana & Diogo. I was sad not to be able to finish before I left but know it’s in capable hands and looking forward to seeing it in action when I come back.

The guests passing through as well as Joana & Jaimes friends gave a really nice balance of peace & quiet without ever feeling bored or cut off
I could go on but already missing the place a lot writing the review and if I talk it up too much I’m worried they won’t have space for me when I want to come back!

Sincere thank you to Joana, Jaime, Francisco and Manuel. Really looking forward to having my own plot of land some day and trying to recreate some of the elements of the Quinta garden (with more spearmint but possibly less aubergine :P). Hands down the best workaway I’ve done and would recommend it without hesitation. When I was there I had access to a scooter but you are so close to Ponta Delgada that you could get around by bike & bus or rent a car which is very cheap in Sao Miguel.

Few other cool things were:
High speed WiFi, probably the best I’ve had anywhere.
Playing music with Jaime and some of his friends; if you’re a musician you’ll really love it here; great space to practice and Jaime is a fantastic musician.
The swimming pond and outdoor showers for the hotter work days!
The hot springs within an hours drive for the cold days!
