When I was a child my mother sang to me in Scots Gaelic, so now in middle age I really regret not taking the opportunity to learn it when I had the chance. However, now that I have the time, learning the language also establishes another connection with her. Also, a very good friend of mine is Portuguese and has recently become my personal, and very patient, tutor!

Was könntest du arbeiten?

My employment background is in field archaeology, so generally speaking this has involved working outdoors in all weather conditions. Specifically though, I have very much enjoyed the community engagement side of this work, especially the experiences had whilst leading site tours for clients and the general public, and also helping to host re-enactment groups on various archaeological and historic sites.

Outside of work, I have previously undertaken personal volunteering activities which have involved general groundskeeping and maintenance mainly on local nature reserves and SSSI sites. Activities undertaken have mainly been landscaping, path laying, woodland clearance, coppicing, crop planting/weeding/harvesting, watercourse clearing/de-silting, dry-stone walling and also stonework consolidation/mortar re-pointing.

Finally, and most recently, a friend of mine has taken on a property which has required a great deal modernising and decorating. My input with the project has mainly involved plastering, sanding, painting and tiling. The completion of these tasks has been very personally rewarding, in that my efforts have often also provided motivation and focus, qualities which have been really appreciated by my friend!

Was noch ...

I have always been comfortable and happy being in my own company, especially enjoying walking, hiking and camping. I also enjoy reading, in particular subjects regarding history, folklore and aspects of other cultures. However, I have come to realise the importance of expanding my social network, so recently I have joined a group who arrange a range of social outdoor activities and have also enrolled on a beginners archery course. In addition to these, it is also hoped that becoming a 'workawayer' will further encourage me to become a more sociable and group-orientated person.
